In the 2024-2025 season, the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club impressively reached the semi-finals of the AFC Women's Champions League. With this achievement, the club received approximately US$340,000 (nearly VND 9 billion) from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), including performance bonuses and funding for participation/organization fees. After deducting expenses, a considerable amount remained. However, according to club members, they have not yet received any share of the prize money from their managing unit (Thong Nhat Sports Center). Furthermore, the managing unit stated that the money would be used for future women's football activities. This has caused concern among the club members.
AFC has spent $40,000.
Responding to questions from the press, the Department of Sports and Physical Education, in coordination with the Thong Nhat Sports Center (the unit managing and training football in Ho Chi Minh City, including the Ho Chi Minh City women's club participating in the 2024-2025 AFC Women's Champions League), answered at a press conference providing information on socio-economic issues in Ho Chi Minh City on July 24th.
Regarding performance bonuses, the Ho Chi Minh City women's club received $40,000 USD for their two wins in the group stage of the AFC Women's Champions League ($20,000 USD per match). The $40,000 USD was transferred by the AFC to the Thong Nhat Sports Center's account and converted by the State Bank of Vietnam at the exchange rate at the time of receipt to VND 1,018,200,384 (1.018 billion VND). Accordingly, the Thong Nhat Sports Center disbursed this amount as performance bonuses to coaches and athletes based on the minutes of the coaching staff meeting and the head of the sport (transferred to individual accounts and paid on behalf of personal income tax) of VND 1,018,200,384.

In addition to the prize money for their two group stage wins from the AFC, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) awarded the Ho Chi Minh City women's club 500 million VND after their quarter-final victory, disbursed through the Thong Nhat Sports Center. Furthermore, the Thong Nhat Sports Center proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports promptly award them 100 million VND from the sports talent fund, and this reward has been disbursed.
Surplus of 3.7 billion VND: How to spend it?
Regarding the participation fee, the AFC provided the Ho Chi Minh City women's club with USD 300,000: USD 100,000 for participating in the group stage, USD 80,000 for reaching the quarter-finals, and USD 120,000 for reaching the semi-finals. Accordingly, this USD 300,000 was transferred by the AFC to the account of the Thong Nhat Sports Center, and the State Bank of Vietnam converted it to VND 7,686,218,811 (7.686 billion dong) at the exchange rate at the time of receipt.
The sum of 7.686 billion VND was spent on items such as: organizing the quarter-final match; hiring foreign players to participate in the quarter-finals and semi-finals; training costs in preparation for the AFC Women's Champions League; expenses for participating in the quarter-final match; expenses for participating in the semi-final match; and nutritional support costs for coaches and athletes of the team during the tournament.
After deducting the above amounts, the remaining balance is 3,738,732,334 VND (3.738 billion VND).
On July 14th, the coaching staff and the entire Ho Chi Minh City Women's Football Club submitted document No. 81/TTr-BMBD to the Football Department, along with the minutes of the Women's Football Department meeting on July 14th, requesting that 30% of the budget be allocated to preparation for the 2025-2026 season and 70% be allocated to individual team members.
On July 22nd, the management board of Thong Nhat Sports Center held a meeting with the coaching staff, the women's football supervisor, and representatives from the Ho Chi Minh City Football Federation regarding the proper use of AFC financial support in accordance with the tournament regulations issued by the AFC.
Accordingly, the unused funds will be managed and used for the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club in accordance with current financial regulations and will be specified in the regulations on the management and use of financial support for the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club (specifically the first team - the team participating directly in the tournament).
On July 23rd, the Thong Nhat Sports Center held a meeting with the coaching staff and those in charge of women's football to gather feedback on the draft regulations for the use of the allocated funds. It is expected that by July 25th, the coaching staff and those in charge of women's football will finalize their feedback and propose a reasonable expenditure level. The Thong Nhat Sports Center guarantees that the management and use of the allocated funds will be for the intended purpose and in accordance with the law.
