The Moments updates for Windows 11 brought us exciting news throughout 2023, including a new taskbar optimized for 2-in-1 devices, a modernized system tray, numerous accessibility improvements, a widget panel enhancement, the implementation of the AI-based Copilot assistant, a new File Explorer design, and improvements to applications (Notepad, Microsoft Store, Paint, or Clippings)...
AI is one of the key highlights of Windows in the future.
However, all of this pales in comparison to what we can expect in 2024. Despite the departure of Panos Panay, now the former head of the Windows division, Microsoft's commitment to its operating system is unquestionable.
This year, Microsoft plans to release what could be called Windows 12, codenamed Hudson Valley. It's a major update with a primary focus on deeply integrating AI into the operating system. AI is the highlight of 2023, with every company concentrating on this much-talked-about new technology. Entering this new market, Microsoft is leading the way thanks to its partnership with OpenAI, and this is evident in outstanding products like Copilot.
Microsoft is also reportedly working on a future version of Windows with better security and faster updates called CorePC. This initiative allows Windows to scale better across different devices while still supporting legacy applications. CorePC is built from the ground up and focuses on performance, security, and modularity. According to sources, Microsoft may launch the first version of CorePC this year, hoping to replace Windows in the not-too-distant future and make ChromeOS a competitor to this Microsoft product.
Microsoft will make many efforts to make the operating system even better.
Furthermore, an issue that cannot be ignored for Windows users in 2024 is ARM. After years of living in the shadow of Apple and its excellent ARM chips, it seems Windows will finally have a weapon to fight back: the new Snapdragon X Elite chip from Qualcomm. This chip is ideal for laptops and 2-in-1 laptops thanks to its excellent energy efficiency without sacrificing performance.
Overall, Windows 12, CorePC, AI, and ARM are the most noteworthy issues facing Microsoft's operating system in 2024. The future of the platform rests in their hands, but will everything be successful? The answer will be revealed within the next 12 months.
