MU closes £70m deal to replace Fernandes

MU is targeting midfielder Pedro Goncalves as a replacement if Bruno Fernandes decides to join Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Pedro Goncalves becomes a transfer target of MU.

If Fernandes decides to sign a three-year contract with the Saudi Arabian team, MU will have more spare budget to complete the Goncalves deal. According to ESPN , the "Red Devils" are willing to spend 70 million pounds to bring Goncalves to Old Trafford.

Goncalves spent two years with Wolves as a youth player but never made a first-team appearance before returning to Portugal. Coach Amorim signed him for Sporting Lisbon from Famalicao six years ago and he has developed into a versatile attacking midfielder who can play on either flank.

In 2021, Goncalves scored 23 goals to help Sporting end a 19-year domestic title drought. Despite missing five months last season due to a torn thigh muscle, the midfielder returned strongly with an important goal in the final round win over Vitoria, helping the team successfully defend the Portuguese championship.

Aston Villa are also interested in Goncalves, but United believe his good relationship with coach Amorim will give them an advantage. A major obstacle is that if Arsenal or Napoli move quickly to sign Viktor Gyokeres, Sporting will not want to sell two key stars at the same time.

Meanwhile, Fernandes is seriously considering leaving Old Trafford after more than 5 years. British media reported that Fernandes agreed to join Al-Hilal.

The move to Saudi Arabia has not affected Fernandes' international career. Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruben Neves are still playing for the national team despite playing in this tournament.

Notably, Sporting will receive more than £5 million if Fernandes leaves thanks to a clause that allows them to receive 10% of the profits from selling players to MU.
