Josh Cullen scored an own goal. |
A week ago, Manchester United only managed to score the opening goal thanks to an own goal by Rodrigo Muniz against Fulham. This seemingly humorous statistic makes Man United the first team in Premier League history to have both of their opening goals of the season come from… own goals by the opposing team. But behind this irony lies an alarming reality: MU's attack remains worryingly ineffective.
In the first half of the match against Burnley, Manchester United made no effort to create chances. They unleashed 15 shots – the most in a Premier League half since April 2024 (against Sheffield United). Four of those shots were on target, with an expected goals (xG) of 1.43, but neither Matheus Cunha nor Bryan Mbeumo could capitalize to open their Premier League account in their new colors.
Poor finishing has long been a major headache for manager Ruben Amorim. Last season, MU only scored 44 goals – the worst record in the club's history in the Premier League. Therefore, the team spent £200 million to rebuild their attack.
It wasn't until the second half that Mbeumo finally opened the scoring, netting his first Premier League goal for MU, after having already scored on his Carabao Cup debut (although the Red Devils were eliminated). However, the joy was short-lived as Cunha suffered an injury and was forced to leave the field before scoring his first goal for his new club.
In the final moments of the match at Old Trafford, Manchester United secured a thrilling 3-2 victory against Burnley. Bruno Fernandes shone in injury time of the second half with a successful penalty kick.
