Five Japanese people share an old supercar.

Carpooling services in Japan allow young people to "co-own" supercars at a reasonable cost.

According to Carscoops , owning a supercar, even a used one, is still a rather expensive hobby. Understanding this, a Japanese company has introduced a solution to give young speed enthusiasts the chance to own a supercar. The idea is quite simple: instead of spending a large sum of money to own a supercar outright, the company "divides" the car into smaller portions for a group of five people.

The supercar-sharing service called Rendez-Vous doesn't simply split the entire value of the car into five parts. Instead, the entire group pays a fee to own the car for a year, and the members only share the depreciation that the car is expected to incur over those 12 months.

Speaking to Nikkei Asia , Kanji Hiraiwa, one of the service's customers, considered himself a co-owner of the used Ferrari 360 Modena for the next year.

Kanji Hiraiwa stated that through the service, each member has the right to use the vehicle for 50 days a year. The costs include parking fees, maintenance, insurance, and all applicable taxes.

Rendez-Vous reportedly only deals in used cars. The company directly purchases the vehicles before adding them to its "rental" portfolio.

Rendez-Vous offers a wide variety of vehicles, from classic cars of the 1950s to modern sports cars and supercars. Reports indicate that the service is attracting considerable interest from young customers in Japan, with a waiting list currently reaching around 3,500 people.

“The cost of owning a car is too high for people in their 20s. We hope to minimize the financial burden as much as possible so that customers can enjoy the joy of driving,” said Ryota Asaoka, a representative of Rendez-Vous.

Carscoops commented that this is an interesting idea, potentially the best way for young customers to fulfill their dream of driving a supercar without spending too much of their savings.

Services like Rendez-Vous could also help prevent a decline in demand for car ownership among Japanese citizens.

A recent survey revealed that 33% of Japanese people in their 20s are not interested in owning a car. An independent study conducted by Toyota also indicated that the cost of purchasing and maintaining a car are the main reasons why locals are hesitant to traditionally own one.
