Explaining the appeal of "Red Rain", experts agree that the work's big success is primarily due to its good script, touching people's hearts, large investment, dedicated crew and actors who all devote their all to their roles.
"The Whispers of Comrades"
Director Dang Thai Huyen expressed that the number of 7 million views of "Red Rain" as of the evening of September 7 is the number that makes her and the film crew burst into tears, it is like a dream that the artists participating in the film have realized with sincerity. The audience is the one who completed that dream, bringing the dream of "Red Rain" to a very long and very memorable journey.
Colonel - writer Chu Lai, author of the script "Red Rain", said that the script was conceived in 2010, when he received an order from the younger brother of martyr Vu Huy Cuong who sacrificed his life at Quang Tri Citadel . Although he did not experience the fire and smoke at the citadel, and did not directly participate in the battle to protect Quang Tri Citadel, to create "Red Rain", the writer drove to Quang Tri, stayed for a whole week, and met with witnesses, veterans, guerrillas and local people.

There were even nights when he went to the citadel to listen to the "whispers of his comrades" under the deep soil. He was also present on the journey from North to South, talking to witnesses in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Dien Bien... to get the most truthful and touching information. From real-life material, he fictionalized typical characters. Ms. Hong - the guerrilla boatwoman - is the crystallization of many witnesses. With the character Cuong, built from a real-life martyr, a student, a wealthy family, loves music , studies Vovinam martial arts, and is full of ideals.
Commenting on "Red Rain", writer Chu Lai expressed that when brought to the screen, the work seemed to take on a more muscular, powerful form. When "Red Rain" was warmly received by the audience, especially young audiences, he felt extremely moved. "I appreciate the artistic labor of the entire crew, who had to exchange all day, even all month of filming on set just to recreate a sentence in literature. I think that in terms of recreating the fierce atmosphere of bombs and bullets, cinema has done better than literature" - the scriptwriter of "Red Rain" confided.

Having received much support from the audience with "Tunnels - Sun in the Dark", director Bui Thac Chuyen commented that "Red Rain" is more difficult in both scale and difficulty than "Tunnels - Sun in the Dark". From his experience in making war films, the male director believes that making a war film on the ground is very difficult, even the most difficult thing.
Dedicated cast
Rarely has a film been invested in so elaborately from the pre-production stage, with a grand setting and many large battle scenes like "Red Rain". Colonel Nguyen Thu Dung, Director of the People's Army Cinema, shared that since the project was first developed, the Army Cinema has received direct and consistent guidance from the Central Military Commission, the Ministry of National Defense and the Chief of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.
Director Dang Thai Huyen further emphasized that the Army Cinema's luck is to have the advantage of receiving support from colleagues and military branches who have provided the best support for the film crew. The director said that she read the script for "Red Rain" in 2013. 10 years later, in 2023, she entered the film and after a period of preparation and contact with witnesses, "Red Rain" officially started filming in late 2024, early 2025. The film is set in the summer but was filmed in the winter and therefore, the female director said that the crew devoted 200% of their efforts to this film.

Actress Ha Anh, who plays nurse Hong, fainted while filming a scene in the pouring rain on a cold day below 10 degrees Celsius, but when she woke up, she still asked the director if they needed to reshoot the scene. Not only Ha Anh, but the entire cast of Squad 1 including Phuong Nam (Ta), Do Nhat Hoang (Cuong), Lam Thanh Nha (Binh), Dinh Khang (Tu), Hoang Long (Sen), Nguyen Hung (Hai), Tran Gia Huy (Tan)... all tried their best for their roles.
The cast does not have any "box office stars" but most of them fit the role, their performances touched the audience's emotions. The dedication and devotion of the actors made director Dang Thai Huyen comment that they were no longer actors but characters coming out of the film. "What touched me most was that the filmmaking process was so difficult, arduous and arduous. During the 81 days and nights, there were times when I felt like giving up because I had never made such a difficult film before, but in the film crew, there was never a moment when anyone was discouraged or had negative thoughts. Therefore, when "Red Rain" was well received, the most important thing for me was to feel that the effort that everyone put in during the 81 days and nights had brought about wonderful results" - director Dang Thai Huyen confided.
According to Mr. Dang Tran Cuong, Director of the Department of Cinema, the success of "Red Rain" shows that Vietnamese audiences, especially young people, are not indifferent to war films, as long as the work is of sufficient quality.
Insiders hope that the recent success of historical war films will create a film genre that can compete with commercial, purely entertaining films and become an important film sector of cultural life in Vietnam.
Golden time
One advantage of "Red Rain" is that it was released at the right time, when patriotism was high, the whole nation was united in celebrating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2. "I appreciate seeing the young generation go to the cinema seriously, not out of curiosity or following trends. There are audiences who have gone to see it 4-5 times" - writer Chu Lai acknowledged.
According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam, as of noon on September 8, the movie "Red Rain" earned more than 564 billion VND, still holding the top position in the list of Vietnamese box office revenue by day. The movie currently has 4,369 screenings by day and also has the most screenings compared to all the movies currently showing in the Vietnamese market. With the current growth, "Red Rain" can set an impressive record for the Vietnamese film market, with revenue predicted to reach 700 billion VND or more.
