Gattuso is the new head coach of the Italian national team. |
On June 15th, Gattuso was appointed head coach of the Italian national team by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), replacing Luciano Spalletti. According to Gazzetta , the former AC Milan midfielder will receive a salary of 2 million euros per year.
This salary places Gattuso among the mid-paid coaches in Europe. Although the contract duration is being kept confidential by the FIGC, Gattuso will be responsible for helping Italy qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Initially, Gattuso was not the FIGC's top choice. However, Spalletti's sudden departure prompted rapid negotiations, especially as Italy was participating in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. To become the national team's coach, Gattuso beat out several other candidates such as Stefano Pioli, Daniele De Rossi, and Fabio Cannavaro.
Gattuso has managed AC Milan, Napoli, Marseille, and most recently Hajduk Split. At Napoli, he led the team to the Coppa Italia title in the 2019/20 season. As a player, Gattuso was known for his fiery and physical style of play, making 73 appearances for the national team and scoring one goal.
The Italian national team will return to the pitch with a 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Estonia on September 5th, followed by a clash with Israel on September 8th. This will be an opportunity for Gattuso to assert his leadership and rebuild the image of the "Azzurri" on the international stage.
