Gattuso is the new coach of the Italian national team. |
On June 15, Gattuso was appointed head coach of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) as the national team, replacing Luciano Spalletti. According to information from Gazzetta , the former AC Milan midfielder will receive a salary of 2 million euros per year.
The salary puts Gattuso in the middle of Europe’s paid ranks. Although the length of the contract has been kept secret by the FIGC, Gattuso will be tasked with helping Italy qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Gattuso was not initially the FIGC's top choice. However, Spalletti's sudden departure forced negotiations to move quickly, with Italy currently in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Gattuso beat out other candidates such as Stefano Pioli, Daniele De Rossi and Fabio Cannavaro to become the team's coach.
Gattuso has coached AC Milan, Napoli, Marseille and most recently Hajduk Split. At Napoli, he helped the team win the Coppa Italia in the 2019/20 season. During his playing days, Gattuso was known for his fiery and aggressive style of play, making 73 appearances for the national team and scoring 1 goal.
Italy will return to action with a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Estonia on September 5, followed by a clash with Israel on September 8. This will be an opportunity for Gattuso to assert his leadership and rebuild the "Azzurri" image on the international stage.
