This agreement was reached during a trilateral meeting of the defense ministers of the UK, the US, and Australia at the Singapore International Security Summit on May 30.
According to a joint statement by the defense ministers of the three AUKUS member countries, the new robotic system will be designed to perform a variety of tasks, such as deep-sea reconnaissance, maritime patrol, protection of critical infrastructure, and especially underwater communication cables.
These vehicles will be capable of accurately striking targets at sea.
The total cost of this program has not yet been announced, but the UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed it will contribute £150 million (approximately $201 million) to the project.
"The integration of offensive systems into unmanned underwater platforms is expected to significantly expand the operational capabilities of the navies of the three countries in the Asia-Pacific region."
Furthermore, jointly developing advanced sensors and weapon systems for UUVs will enhance the ability to counter threats to underwater infrastructure such as cables and pipelines,” said U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
The AUKUS alliance was established in 2021 by the US, UK, and Australia to jointly develop nuclear submarines and share military expertise.
