DTO - Since July 1, along with other communes and wards of Dong Thap province, My Tho commune has entered a new and promising development journey. The place was established from 4 separate "pieces" (My Tho, My Hoi, My Xuong communes and My Tho town) blending to create a vibrant picture of agricultural economy , services and garden tourism, ready to "take off" on the development map of Dong Thap.

Join forces, unleash the potential of the fertile land
After the merger, My Tho commune has an area of nearly 61.5 km² and a population of more than 51,000 people, becoming one of the largest communes in the new Dong Thap province. This number is not only an increase in area and population, but also a valuable “capital”, creating momentum for future progress.
Discussing the development orientation of the locality when the administrative boundaries are expanded, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan - Chairman of the People's Committee of My Tho commune said: "The population size and expanded area will create favorable conditions to mobilize investment resources, with the opportunity to attract large-scale socio-economic projects. The infrastructure is planned more synchronously, with better connectivity within the commune and neighboring areas, creating favorable conditions for trade and trade - service development".
Notably, My Tho commune has National Highway 30 connecting directly to Cao Lanh ward and major economic centers of the province and the Cao Lanh - An Huu expressway under construction, promising to be a strong "push" for trade and service development. Intra-commune and inter-commune roads are also being upgraded, expanding connectivity. This helps the locality's key agricultural products such as rice, mango, fish, and frogs easily access large markets, reduce transportation costs and improve export capacity.
Before the merger, each old administrative unit had its own distinct “plus points”. For example, My Xuong commune was famous for its specialty mango area of over 495 hectares, with the famous Cat Chu mango variety. Meanwhile, My Tho and My Hoi communes owned high-quality rice fields and diverse aquaculture ponds such as frogs and freshwater fish. In particular, My Tho town has long been an administrative and commercial center with service infrastructure ready to meet all needs.
The combination of these strengths has created a superior overall advantage for the new My Tho commune. From here, a large commodity raw material area has been formed, with a closed value chain from production, harvesting to processing and consumption. Thereby contributing to increasing product value, diversifying income sources for farmers.
Amidst the vast agricultural “picture”, in recent years, eco-tourism and farmstay models have emerged as a “new breeze” for the economy of My Tho commune. The Mango Trail - a garden tourism destination in (former My Xuong tourist village) is a clear demonstration of this potential.
Ms. Ho Thi Thu Thuy - owner of The Mango Trail shared: “My hometown is now much larger. Previously, I only exploited the point in My Xuong, now I can proactively connect with the whole new My Tho area. Accordingly, the tour itinerary is also longer and more diverse, creating opportunities for us to renew the image of the farmstay, connect fruit gardens, nurseries, experience mango harvesting... bringing unique experiences to visitors”.

Connecting for sustainable development
With the new scale, My Tho commune is making efforts to review and adjust the planning to unify the local development orientation. The consistent viewpoint in the local development planning is to preserve the unique values, the ecosystem of fruit gardens, key rice production areas, traditional residential areas, while at the same time creating motivation for specialized agricultural production areas and developing trade and services in the commune center. The goal is to maintain the brand of specialty agricultural products, preserve the landscape and cultural identity, and improve people's lives.
From the farmers’ perspective, the merger opens up many expectations for a brighter future. Mr. Tran Phu Hau, a long-time mango grower in the locality, said: “After the merger, the larger space opens up new opportunities for farmers. The gardeners hope that the commune and provincial authorities will continue to accompany farmers in helping them access science and technology, improve production techniques, as well as connect with purchasing enterprises to create stable output for mangoes, thereby contributing to increasing income for people in rural areas.”
In response to the trust and legitimate expectations of local people, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan - Chairman of My Tho Commune People's Committee informed about some solutions and socio-economic development of the commune. Accordingly, the locality continues to focus on strengthening the connection of intra-commune and inter-commune traffic infrastructure, forming a convenient trade corridor, shortening the time of transporting goods. Along with that, the locality will renovate residential areas, markets, invest in upgrading schools, medical stations, cultural and sports areas towards improving the overall quality of life for the people.
In the period of 2025 - 2030, My Tho commune has identified many breakthrough priority solutions. Notably, it is developing high-tech agriculture in a safe, organic direction, closely linking regions from production to consumption. At the same time, promoting the development of cooperative economy with the core being cooperatives to reorganize agricultural production in a concentrated, large-scale, and effective direction, solving sustainable output for agricultural products; encouraging the development of trade and services, promoting the central role of the old town area to create a lever for economic development of the whole commune.
Enterprises pre-process Cat Chu mango products before consuming in domestic and export markets.
In addition to economic development, the preservation and promotion of traditional cultural values are also a top priority for the locality. In particular, My Tho commune will take advantage of attracting investment resources, support programs from the Central, the province and the National Target Programs to develop sustainable agriculture and rural areas, promote the development of eco-tourism, and experience agriculture associated with typical products such as mango, frog, rice... is also a strategic direction.
In particular, the locality will gradually urbanize the administrative center (old town), re-plan urban spaces, parks, squares, markets, and agency headquarters in a synchronous and modern manner, aiming to achieve the criteria of type V and type IV urban areas.
With clear strategic directions and consensus of the government and people, My Tho creates momentum for comprehensive and sustainable development, worthy of being a bright spot on the agricultural, service and tourism map of Dong Thap.
