On May 28, the US and Iran conducted reciprocal airstrikes near the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping lane connecting the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea.
According to Reuters, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for attacking a US air base, following US airstrikes targeting an Iranian position near the Strait of Hormuz.
A U.S. official said the U.S. military shot down four Iranian drones and attacked a ground control station in the port city of Bandar Abbas, where a fifth drone was believed to be about to launch. The official said the U.S. actions were “defensive” and aimed at maintaining the ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the IRGC said the attack on the US base was in retaliation for a US airstrike near Bandar Abbas airport earlier that morning. The group did not name the targeted base.

This new development has heightened concerns about the fragility of the ceasefire between the US and Iran, which has been in effect since the beginning of April. Oil prices have rebounded following reports of escalating tensions, while stock markets have fallen and the US dollar has strengthened.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump rejected reports from Iranian state television about an informal draft agreement aimed at restoring commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within a month. According to this report, Iran and Oman would jointly manage traffic through the strait.
Trump asserted that no single nation should control this shipping lane, emphasizing that it is international waters. The White House subsequently called reports of the draft agreement "completely fabricated."
The remaining sticking points in negotiations include sanctions, Iran's nuclear program, and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Before the conflict, this waterway was the transit point for about one-fifth of the world 's oil and liquefied natural gas.
