As one of the exemplary households in crop restructuring in Na Duong commune, Mr. Be Van Quang from Ban San village said: "Previously, my family mainly grew rice and corn to meet our family's needs. Thanks to the commune government's promotion, in 2023, my family converted 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of low-yield land to growing baby cucumbers. Recognizing that baby cucumbers are a short-term crop with a stable market, in 2026, my family expanded the area to 5 sao. After harvesting, the yield reached over 6 tons, bringing in an income of about 50 million VND."
Like Mr. Quang's family, Mr. Vi Van Hau's family in Ban Tau village has boldly developed a chili pepper farming model. Mr. Hau said: "Recognizing the high economic efficiency of chili pepper cultivation, since 2021, my family has converted our dry rice fields to chili pepper cultivation. During the planting and care process, I regularly attended training courses on scientific and technical transfer organized by the commune to apply to my family's model. As a result, our chili pepper crop has grown and developed well, yielding stable productivity. On average, my family plants about 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of chili peppers each year, with a yield of about 2.5 tons, bringing in an income of 35 to 40 million VND, 2 to 3 times higher than growing rice or corn."
Not only the two families mentioned above, but over the years, people in Na Duong commune have actively transformed their crop structure. Besides the proactive efforts of the people, the Na Duong commune government has paid attention to and implemented many solutions to support them. Mr. To Van Thoai, acting Head of the Economic Department of Na Duong commune, said: "Through research, we found that the local climate and soil conditions are quite suitable for developing crops such as chili peppers, cucumbers, watermelons, potatoes, etc., so the department has advised the commune government to guide and encourage people to convert inefficient agricultural land to the production of these crops. Accordingly, to support the people, each year, the department advises the People's Committee of the commune to coordinate with specialized units to organize 2 to 4 training courses to guide people on techniques for caring for and controlling pests and diseases on some crops." In particular, from 2025 to the present, using funds from national target programs, the commune government has implemented two potato cultivation model development projects involving two cooperatives and 30 households, covering an area of 50 hectares; with a total support capital of approximately 3 billion VND. After implementation, the model has yielded practical results, with an average yield of about 16 to 18 tons/ha and an economic value of 90 to 100 million VND/ha. Currently, the model is being maintained and developed by the local people.
Furthermore, the commune government also focuses on supporting and facilitating people's access to preferential loan sources to restructure crop production and expand output. Accordingly, to date, the entire commune has a total outstanding loan balance from entrusted funds through the Social Policy Bank exceeding 137 billion VND, with 1,492 borrowing households.
Thanks to the guidance and support of the commune government and the proactive efforts of the people, the entire commune has converted inefficient agricultural land to cultivate crops such as potatoes (115 ha), cucumbers (112 ha), watermelons (77 ha), and chili peppers (103 ha)... From these models, each household has gained an average additional income of 30 to 60 million VND per year. This has contributed to increasing production value per unit area, improving people's lives, and creating motivation for people in the area to continue transforming the crop structure, gradually forming concentrated commodity production areas.
The restructuring of crop patterns has yielded practical results, helping many households in Na Duong commune increase their income, making a positive contribution to poverty reduction, and promoting socio-economic development in the locality. By the end of 2025, the average per capita income of the commune will reach 45.7 million VND/person/year; the poverty rate will be 3.78% (a decrease of 1.72% compared to 2024).
