Producing high-quality, safe fruit.
In recent years, the area of fruit tree cultivation in Can Tho City has continuously increased, contributing significantly to the local agricultural production structure and improving people's incomes. Along with developing fruit crops for export, farmers in Can Tho City are also focusing on boosting domestic consumption, especially during the Lunar New Year. However, the domestic market is increasingly demanding higher quality, competing with many imported fruits. To expand the domestic market, farmers have intensified the application of advanced techniques and implemented many measures recommended by relevant authorities to produce high-quality, safe products.

Farmers in Thoi Hung commune are applying the method of bagging mangoes to produce high-quality products for the market.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Trung, residing in Hamlet 8, Thoi Hung Commune, Can Tho City, stated: “I have 5 acres of Hoa Loc mango trees that have been treated to bear fruit for sale during the 2026 Lunar New Year, with an expected yield of over 3 tons. Besides following the agricultural sector's recommendations on pesticide application and fertilization according to the 'four correct principles,' I also apply pest and disease control measures by bagging the fruit. This reduces the need for pesticides, while still ensuring the mangoes are of high quality, safe, and have a beautiful color. Producing high-quality, visually appealing fruit is crucial for selling at a high price during Tet.”
To ensure product quality and prevent pest and disease damage, farmers also apply fruit bagging to many other fruits such as custard apples, star apples, pomelos, jackfruit, bananas, and plums. Ms. Le Thi Linh Dan, from Hamlet 3, Thoi Hung Commune, Can Tho City, who has over 2 hectares of custard apple trees, said: “To have products to sell in time for Tet this year, I have prepared about 2,000 custard apples, equivalent to 2-2.5 tons of fruit. All of them are covered with specialized bags from a young age to prevent pests and insects, helping the fruit have a bright and beautiful skin color when harvested. Thanks to this, we reduce the use of pesticides, reduce costs, and get safe, high-quality custard apples.” According to Ms. Dan, custard apples are not only exported but also quite popular domestically, especially due to the tradition of displaying custard apples in the five-fruit offering tray during the traditional Tet holiday. Recently, the price of soursop has remained at 20,000-25,000 VND/kg, and Ms. Dan hopes to be able to sell it at a higher price this Tet holiday, like in previous years.
Promote the application of technological advancements in production.
To maximize the effectiveness of fruit orchards and improve product quality and value, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City has actively provided technical training and guidance to farmers on applying advanced techniques and replicating effective production models linked to consumer markets. They have supported farmers in establishing planting area codes and applying advanced farming processes, especially good agricultural practices standards such as VietGAP and Global GAP. This has resulted in the production of clean, high-quality, and safe agricultural products that meet the requirements of both domestic and export markets. The relevant authorities have also strengthened support in connecting farmers with businesses and consumers to stabilize product outlets.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, the city currently has a total area of over 119,300 hectares of perennial crops, of which over 100,300 hectares are fruit trees. The fruit trees grown in the city are diverse in variety, with many delicious, specialty fruits of high economic value such as durian, mango, longan, star apple, jackfruit, pomelo, guava, custard apple, rambutan, pineapple, mangosteen… with an annual production of over 1.15 million tons. In addition, the city also has 12,479 hectares of various types of coconut trees. The increasing and diversifying area of fruit trees helps create a large and abundant supply of goods to meet consumer demand. It is projected that the city will have approximately 3,500 hectares of fruit trees ready for the 2026 Lunar New Year, with an estimated production of over 50,000 tons.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, farmers and fruit-growing cooperatives need to proactively secure human resources to ensure the harvesting, preliminary processing, preservation, transportation, and consumption of fruit during Tet (Lunar New Year). They should strengthen linkages with businesses in production, processing, and consumption along the value chain; forming large-scale commodity production areas that yield high economic efficiency. To help farmers have a successful Tet fruit harvest, local authorities need to closely coordinate with city agencies to closely monitor the production and consumption of farmers' products and provide timely support. After the Lunar New Year, they should continue to monitor, direct, and guide farmers in sustainable production and care. They should promote the application of technical measures such as pruning, shaping, using water-saving irrigation systems, disease-free seeds, and ensuring traceability and certification to improve production efficiency.
