Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius in many places, with exceptionally intense heat.

The heatwave in Northern and Central Vietnam reached its peak today (May 25th). A sweltering atmosphere enveloped many provinces and cities as temperatures rose to exceptionally high levels.

According to the latest data, Hanoi, along with the provinces of Phu Tho, Bac Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh, have all recorded high temperatures ranging from 40 to nearly 41 degrees Celsius. These temperatures were measured under standard weather conditions at a meteorological shelter.

In reality, due to the influence of solar radiation and heat-absorbing surfaces like concrete and asphalt, the actual perceived outdoor temperature today could be 2 to 5 degrees Celsius higher, reaching up to 46 degrees Celsius.

This is the second heatwave in May this year, but it is more intense and longer-lasting than the one from May 13th to 16th. At the same time, it is also one of the three most severe heatwaves ever to occur in May between 2021 and 2026.

In Hanoi alone, today's temperature is approximately the same as the heatwaves recorded in May of 2021 and 2023.

The peak of this heatwave will last for the next two days with an intensity similar to today. In these extreme heat conditions, people should limit outdoor activities between 10 am and 4 pm. Those working in the heat should take appropriate breaks and stay hydrated to avoid dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke.

The scorching heat has driven electricity consumption to record highs.

Due to the intense heatwave, the national power grid continued to record new record highs in electricity consumption today, especially in the northern region. According to the National Power System and Electricity Market Operation Company, the nationwide load capacity at peak around 2 PM today reached approximately 55,200 MW. This is a very high level, reflecting a sharp increase in electricity demand amidst widespread intense heat.

Power output in the North has set a new record, increasing by 5.8% compared to the record set 10 days ago. Power output in the Central and Southern regions also increased significantly. It is expected that at 10 PM today, the peak load of the national power system and the North will reach 53,600 MW and 29,300 MW respectively, marking a new record for consumption this year, surpassing last year's record for the North.

According to forecasts, this heatwave will continue for the next three days. Therefore, using electricity economically and efficiently during the peak dry season of 2026, especially during peak hours at noon and in the evening, is a requirement to contribute to ensuring the safe operation of the national power system.

3 scenarios for meeting increased electricity demand

To meet the increasing demand and ensure the safe and stable operation of the national power system, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has put forward three scenarios for electricity load increase: a baseline scenario with an 8.5% increase, an operational scenario with an 11.7% increase, and a contingency scenario where demand could increase by up to 14.1% during peak dry season months.

With the scenarios outlined, the necessary infrastructure for adequate power sources is also in place, ensuring they can be mobilized during this year's hot season.

According to forecasts, several heatwaves are likely to occur between now and July, which could lead to continued high electricity consumption. Therefore, in addition to ensuring supply, people and businesses need to use electricity economically, especially during peak hours, to ensure the safe operation of the power system and optimize costs for electricity users.
