"TikTok has been banned in Nepal on a policy basis from today. The technical aspects of the ban will require some time. The Ministry of Information and Communications will facilitate the implementation of the ban," Minister Sharma said.

Nepal's Telecommunications Authority chairman, Purushottam Khanal, told Reuters that some internet service providers have blocked TikTok and others are doing the same.

The decision was made after numerous TikTok posts were deemed to be causing social unrest and damaging relationships. Over the past four years, Nepalese police have recorded a total of 1,648 cybercrimes, the majority of which involved TikTok content. TikTok has not yet responded to the decision.

A few days ago, the Nepalese government issued a directive on the operation of social media platforms, stipulating that platforms must open an office or appoint a representative in the country within three months of the directive's effective date if they wish to operate. Platforms are also required to register with the Nepalese Ministry of Information and Communications. The directive also outlines 19 prohibitions for users of social media platforms.
