The bilateral nuclear-sharing agreement between Russia and Belarus was initiated in 2023, and Moscow compared it to similar actions within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). At the time, Russia and Belarus stated that the move was in response to the “increasing hostility” of the US-led military bloc.

According to RT, several Iskander short-range ballistic missile systems have been deployed in Belarus. The corresponding “special ammunition,” the Russian military term for nuclear warheads, is stored separately at a secure facility.
