Russia is developing a long-range, wide-body aircraft in the research and design phase, said Vadim Badekha, CEO of United Aircraft Corporation, in an interview with TASS ahead of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

According to Mr. Badekha, the process of perfecting the aircraft will take at least 7-10 years. He said that Russia is finalizing the technical requirements for the project, while emphasizing the urgent need for such an aircraft in the national fleet.

The head of UAC believes that the development of new aircraft should be based on future trends and requirements. He noted that over a long development period, the market may see the emergence of many competing new aircraft models.

According to Badekha, the PD-35 engine will be a key component of the project. Only when the propulsion system is clear can Russia fully assess the feasibility of the program.

Currently, the entire Russian long-haul fleet consists primarily of aircraft manufactured abroad. Meanwhile, airlines are struggling to operate these aircraft. The Ilyushin Il-96 is considered a temporary solution, but its economic efficiency is significantly lower than that of its competitors.
