However, in recent years, Vietnam has seen as many as 80 beauty pageants of varying sizes awarded annually, leading to numerous controversies regarding the contestants' educational backgrounds, the transparency of the selection process, and scandals that have eroded public trust.
In 2024, Vietnam saw approximately 60 beauty pageants of varying sizes, with hundreds of winners, from Miss Vietnam and Miss Universe to contests like Miss National and Miss Vietnam Global Beach… This “storm” of titles has led to “boredom” and “decline” in beauty contests. The consequences extend beyond diminishing the meaning of the titles; it also fuels controversy. The public is gradually losing interest as many crowned winners lack personality, inspiring stories, or worse, become embroiled in scandals after winning the crown. This raises the urgent question: How can beauty pageants regain the trust and value they once possessed?
One of the prominent issues surrounding beauty pageants is the controversy surrounding the educational background and cultural knowledge of the contestants. Numerous cases of crowned beauty queens who haven't completed their university programs or have falsely claimed to have higher education have sparked heated debate. Some argue that beauty queens need degrees to set an example for the younger generation, while others emphasize that beauty and international communication skills are the core elements. Furthermore, scandals from the personal lives of previous beauty queens continue to overshadow these competitions. From inappropriate behavior to fraudulent business practices and deception of the public, these incidents have eroded audience trust.
In a talk show with Nhan Dan Newspaper after being crowned Miss Vietnam 2024, Miss Ha Truc Linh expressed her desire to bring educational opportunities to children in ethnic minority areas in Phu Yen. Meanwhile, Chau Anh - First Runner-up - emphasized the mission of the younger generation: We always need to learn more, help, and work together to spread good things. And Second Runner-up Van Nhi affirmed: The first thing we need to always remember, preserve, and protect is the core values of our nation.
Looking back at the Miss Vietnam 2024 competition, it's clear that with its spirit of "Beauty - Culture - Intelligence - Dedication," the contest not only celebrated natural beauty but also emphasized social responsibility and cultural values. However, to maintain and enhance its prestige, beauty pageants and contests in general need to continue improving transparency, tightening selection criteria, and investing in meaningful community activities.
