Forecast of future trends for the Australian dollar.
The Australian dollar had a dismal 2023 when compared to the USD, the world's 10th strongest currency. In September 2023, the Australian dollar hit its lowest level in 10 months, after a gradual decline in the preceding months.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), employment in Australia increased by only 0.5 thousand people in January 2024, after a decrease of 62.7 thousand people in December 2023. The unemployment rate rose to 4.1% and the labor force participation rate remained unchanged at 66.8%.
Previously, the market had offered more optimistic forecasts, predicting an additional 30,000 jobs would be created and the unemployment rate would rise to 4.0% from 3.9%. Consequently, the ABS noted that more unemployed people are expected to start work in the next four weeks than usual, which would increase the unemployment rate and significantly impact the Australian dollar.
Gareth Aird, an economist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said: “This is a disappointing report overall despite some seasonal issues. The labor market continued to loosen in January.”
Aird's colleague, foreign exchange strategist Carol Kong, also at Commonwealth Bank, said: “AUD/USD edged lower to around 0.6485 after weaker-than-expected Australian labor force data boosted market expectations of a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) interest rate cut.”
