Banks warn of scams during the Lunar New Year season.

Taking advantage of the increased shopping and financial transaction demand during the Lunar New Year holiday, criminals have continuously employed sophisticated scams combining high technology to steal customers' assets and information. In response to this situation, numerous banks have issued urgent notices.

Banks report that some common forms of fraud today include advertising branded goods at unusually low prices... but with unclear origins, delivering counterfeit goods or failing to deliver; requesting customers to transfer deposit money to reserve goods for Tet (Lunar New Year) and then cutting off communication; impersonating delivery staff to send fake links or applications to steal personal information and card details; or luring customers into participating in "easy work, high pay" jobs to extort money through reservation fees or training fees.

Old and fairly common scam scenarios, such as impersonating police officers or authorities to ask people to "cooperate in investigations"; or impersonating bank employees to request "verification" or "account upgrades," still trap many people. The common thread in these tactics is creating a sense of urgency, putting psychological pressure on victims, and forcing them to provide personal information or transfer money urgently.

In light of this situation, banks recommend that customers adhere to the "5 Don'ts" principle when shopping online, which includes: not trusting unusually low prices; not transferring deposits without verifying the seller; not accessing strange or unknown links; not providing card information or OTP codes to any individual or organization; and not transacting outside of reputable e-commerce platforms or shopping sites. In case of suspected information leakage, customers should immediately block their cards and contact authorities if fraud is detected.
