Currently, dangerous mobile phone applications have appeared on the internet, allowing criminals to carry out phone number impersonation (Voice Phishing) with sophisticated scenarios, capable of impersonating any incoming call number and voice to deceive users.
According to warnings from banks, attackers are using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications with the following features:
Fake Caller ID: Customize the display of any phone number on the recipient's screen. If the fake number matches a number already saved in the user's contacts, the call screen may display the correct saved name, such as a bank hotline, business number, or contact's phone number.
Audio transformation: Integrates voice tone changing features (male/female, old/young) and simulated noise generation (police siren, noisy office, street sounds) to increase credibility.
Psychological manipulation scenarios: Urging, threatening, or reporting emergencies to obtain information.
Potential risk scenarios include:
Scammers impersonate banks, e-commerce websites, or government agencies, requesting money transfers to "holding accounts," registrations for promotional programs, and offers to increase credit card limits, thereby stealing information to carry out illegal transactions using customers' credit cards.
Users can also have their information stolen when perpetrators collect their citizen identification numbers, card numbers, biometric information, OTP codes, usernames, passwords, etc.
Furthermore, these individuals even gain control of devices by impersonating authorities to trick users into installing suspicious applications containing malware, thereby remotely taking control of the phone.
To avoid these risks, banks recommend that customers:
Initial identification: Be highly vigilant for calls that are urgent, threatening, or require confidentiality.
Don't trust caller ID (the number displayed on the screen) completely: The number displayed on the screen can be easily faked.
The three "no" principles: Never provide OTP codes, passwords, or sensitive information over the phone under any circumstances.
Independent verification: When receiving a suspicious call, hang up and proactively call back the corresponding number saved in your contacts or contact the bank or authorities through the organization's published official communication channels and phone numbers.
