National Startup Day for students: Many projects apply new technology

The 7th National Student Startup Festival has just officially opened at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education. The event will take place over 3 days, from April 18 to 20.

The event was chaired by the Ministry of Education and Training, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, and the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, in coordination with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance, and the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).

The event aims to spread the spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation, and entrepreneurial aspirations of students; form a culture of innovative entrepreneurship in educational institutions; promote the participation of universities and vocational training institutions to improve the quality of career counseling, employment, and entrepreneurial support for students.

This year's Startup Festival also aims to summarize 7 years of implementing the Project "Supporting students to start businesses until 2025"; propose new, creative and effective solutions and methods to promote startups among students in the next phase.

Many start-up projects apply new technology

The Ministry of Education and Training said that in 2025, the National Student Startup Day (SV.STARTUP) and the "Students with Startup Ideas" Contest will be held with the main activities: Conference to summarize the project "Supporting students to start a business by 2025"; Opening and closing programs of the National Student Startup Day.

Along with that are seminars and forums: Seminar on "Breakthrough solutions to promote creative startups in higher education institutions; Seminar on "Supporting creative startups at vocational education institutions in the digital economic era"; Seminar on "Solutions to promote innovative startup spirit of students from consulting, career, and employment activities"; Forum on "Startup inspiration from entrepreneurs"; Final round of the 7th "Students with startup ideas" Contest (7th SV.STARTUP); Exchange activities, high-tech demonstrations between delegations attending the Festival; Visiting the space displaying startup ideas of students.

The 7th “Students with Startup Ideas” Contest in 2025 was launched in December 2024. After 2 months of launching, the Organizing Committee received 775 startup projects from students of universities, vocational training institutions and general education institutions. After the semi-finals, the Ministry of Education and Training selected 125 outstanding projects to participate in the final round of the contest.

The Ministry of Education and Training assessed that this is the first year the competition has had the participation of vocational training institutions. This year's startup ideas are of high quality and diverse, with the content of the ideas focusing on solving social problems. The number of junior high school students participating this year has increased compared to previous competitions.

Student projects at training institutions apply new technologies such as IoT, Big Data and AI technology. Many projects have been implemented by students and have had initial success. Many projects have been implemented and moved to the profitable stage and revenue and profit indicators have had quite impressive growth rates.

The judges and investment council this year are economic experts and prestigious businessmen. The competition not only provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their passion, knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit, but also helps these start-up projects access investment opportunities and practical knowledge.

On average, there are 7,100 startup projects of students each year.

Previously, on October 30, 2017, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1665/QD-TTg approving the Project "Supporting students to start businesses until 2025" (Project 1665). After 7 years of implementation with many practical and effective solutions, Project 1665 has created strong changes in the awareness and actions of the entire education sector; the results of the Project have made an important contribution to perfecting the national startup ecosystem.

From 2020 to 2024, the number of student start-up projects is 33,808 projects, an average of 5,635 projects per year. The number of start-up projects of middle and high school students is 8,700 projects, an average of 1,465 projects per year.

The number of startups, initiated by higher education institutions from 2020 to present, is approximately 300. The number of startups that have raised capital from investors is 12, with the largest capital being 1 billion VND/project.

100% of universities and vocational training institutions have plans to support students in starting a business; 90% of high school students, university and college students are educated, equipped with knowledge and skills about starting a business before graduation. The rate of students starting a business after 5 years of graduation continues to be maintained at 8%.

The number of higher education institutions that have made entrepreneurship a compulsory or elective subject, with a minimum of 2 credits/subject, is 58%, including some pedagogical colleges that have made entrepreneurship an elective subject for students. 75% of training institutions have organized short-term training activities for students through entrepreneurship skills classes; 100% of higher education institutions have developed programs to inspire entrepreneurship for students through forums and civic activity weeks at the beginning of the semester.

By 2024, 60% of schools will have established startup clubs in priority areas based on the strengths of the training institutions; 110 training institutions will have arranged common spaces to support startups for students, an increase of 20 training institutions compared to 2023. About 50 training institutions will have established centers to support student startups, an increase of 5 training institutions compared to 2023. 10 training institutions will have established Startup Support Funds for students, most of which are to support incubation and experimental production activities.

During the 7 years of implementing Project 1665, more than 2,100 lecturers and nearly 10,000 students were commended and rewarded by schools for their achievements in start-up activities.

The quality of startup ideas and projects is getting better and better.

Implementing Project 1665, since 2018, the Ministry of Education and Training has organized the National Student Startup Day (SV.STARTUP) and the contest "Students with startup ideas".

After 7 times of organization, the Contest "Students with startup ideas" has received nearly 2,239 projects from higher education institutions; 4,598 startup ideas and projects from vocational education students and more than 1,299 projects from high schools and middle schools.

Of these, 80% of the projects have products and 20% of the projects are ideas or products at the trial production stage. The quality of ideas and startup projects is getting better and better, and is highly appreciated by businesses. Among the winning projects of the competition, there are projects that have received investment from the State and have been deployed for production in some localities.

The entrepreneurial spirit is widely spread throughout the country, including remote, isolated and disadvantaged areas. 50% of universities, academies and colleges have held school-level entrepreneurial competitions. Each year, each school has about 10 to 20 student startup ideas and projects participating in the competitions.

100% of Departments of Education and Training have students participating in student competitions with startup ideas; some localities have organized their own competitions with a large number of project ideas.

Through the competition, more businesses and investment funds are interested in and connect to invest in feasible startup ideas and projects. After the competition ends, the projects with high prizes continue to be incubated to become startups. Feasible projects are also supported by higher education institutions to transfer to the community.
