In a small house in Ha Tu ward, former Truong Son soldier Tran Thi Tu, who was infected with Agent Orange and lived alone for many years, emotionally recounted: “There were rainy seasons when I did not dare to sleep for fear of the roof collapsing. The house was very old, but I did not have the ability to repair it...”. The dream of a solid house seemed far-fetched, but thanks to the help of the Truong Son Women's Soldiers' Association of the province and benefactors, in 2012, Ms. Tu was supported to build a new, spacious house worth nearly 300 million VND, of which the Association contributed 30 million VND along with many essential items. “If in the past we shared each cassava and sweet potato on the battlefield, now we can still live in comradely love, it is truly heartwarming,” Ms. Tu said.
Former Truong Son soldier Nguyen Thi Tu (Thong Nhat commune) also fell into the situation of "leaking roofs and cracked walls" after the historic storm No. 3 in 2024. Receiving 35 million VND in support from the Truong Son Women's Soldiers Association of the province, she repaired the corrugated iron roof, replaced the door, and reinforced the house walls. She shared: "I was very moved. I have been struggling all my life to do business and work in the fields, but I have never dared to dream of repairing a house. Thanks to the sisters in the Association, my house is more stable for me to live in."
Through practical actions, the Truong Son Provincial Women's Association has supported dozens of members to build new and repair houses, give savings books, and visit families with relatives affected by Agent Orange and veterans with serious illnesses. Mr. Nguyen Bong Tien (Tuan Chau Ward), a Truong Son veteran, and his wife are fighting illness in deprived conditions. In 2017, the Truong Son Provincial Women's Association supported him with 50 million VND to build a new house. "My comrades have always been by my side, even when I was on the battlefield in the past when everyday life was difficult...", Mr. Tien shared.
The camaraderie and comradeship is not only expressed through gifts, houses, and savings books, but is also preserved and nurtured through meaningful association activities. Since its establishment (October 2011) with 11 core members, the Truong Son Women's Association has now gathered more than 600 members, including female veterans, former Youth Volunteers, and former Truong Son frontline workers.
Chairwoman of the Truong Son Women's Association of the province, Dang Thi Xuan, affirmed: Despite their old age and poor health, many women still actively participate in activities and preserve the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers. All of them look to each other, to their comrades, and to unforgettable memories." The Association's activities are all associated with the spirit of volunteerism, responsibility, and solidarity. Each member contributes to the Association's Fund according to their ability, and at the same time mobilizes more from benefactors and businesses to have resources to promptly support those in difficult circumstances.
Up to now, the Truong Son Women Soldiers Association has supported the construction and repair of houses for more than 30 member families; donated 64 savings books; visited and presented gifts to dozens of children and grandchildren of members affected by Agent Orange. Although the material value is not large, it contains profound spiritual value, sharing, and overcoming difficulties in life.
For former female soldiers of Truong Son, the Association is not only a uniting organization, but also a place to preserve traditions and spread patriotism to the next generation. Stories of fighting, memories of bombs and bullets, hardships are now told by them in meetings, traditional activities... like a flame that burns forever. They do not relive the past, but live with the spirit of the past: Solidarity, love, and support. The common home of the Association of Female Soldiers of Truong Son province where comradeship continues to be preserved, "no one is left behind".
