Flood season sentiment

In the flood season of 2025, the water from upstream combined with heavy rain and high tides caused some localities in the Dong Thap Muoi region of the province to be submerged in a "sea of water". Water flooded into houses, cut off many roads, and disrupted daily life. Amidst the difficulties, the most beautiful and heartwarming image is the spirit of sharing and supporting each other to overcome difficulties.

Village love and neighborliness

In the early morning of October 23, floodwaters from upstream combined with high tides and local rains caused the water level to suddenly rise, causing a section of the dike protecting the 5,000m2 jackfruit garden of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Sang's family (residing in Nhon Ninh commune, Tay Ninh province) to be submerged in a "sea of water". Upon hearing the news, people around rushed to inquire and find ways to support. However, after many efforts, Mr. Sang's jackfruit garden was "lost". The fish raised in the pond were protected in time thanks to the help of kind neighbors. Mr. Sang choked up: "This flood season, my family lost nearly 200 million VND and all the care. I never thought the flood would be so high, so I did not have a plan to prevent flooding early. Fortunately, thanks to the support of neighbors and relatives, my family was able to reduce some of the damage."

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Sang's family's jackfruit garden is submerged in water.

These days, whenever there is news of a dike overflowing or breaking, people drop all their work and join hands to fix the problem. Not stopping there, people at key dike points are willing to "sacrifice" their family's fruit trees to protect common property, because for them, they have to know how to sacrifice their own for the common good. Mr. Dang Van Tinh (resident of Nhon Ninh commune) shared: "When I heard the news that this dike was overflowing, I dropped all my work, didn't have time to eat breakfast, and ran to help my brothers fill the soil bags to build the dike. Everyone here is the same, ready to "sacrifice" their crops and fruit trees to reinforce the dike. We have to do it for the common good!"

Together to overcome difficulties

Every evening, many local old farmers come to the house of the Head of Go Noi Hamlet, Nhon Hoa Lap Commune, to discuss inspections, ways to reinforce the dike, protect crops and property of their fellow villagers, and then take turns checking at night - the time when the water level is highest during the day. They go to each vulnerable point, wherever they feel danger, water can leak into the fields or there is a risk of the dike breaking, they stop together to check and find ways to fix it. Not only relying on resources and funding from the local government, many old farmers also contribute materials to overcome difficulties together. Thanks to that, when the dike in Go Noi Hamlet broke, the old farmers promptly notified the local government and mobilized forces to participate in patching the dike. And in just a short time, the dike was completely repaired, protecting more than 30 hectares of newly sown winter-spring rice. Mr. Phan Van Khai (residing in Go Noi hamlet, Nhon Hoa Lap commune) said: "The floodwaters have risen so quickly in the past few days that everyone in the village has divided up to check the dikes to promptly handle any incidents. We are determined to protect the dikes in Go Noi hamlet. My family has also contributed Melaleuca piles to help reinforce the weak dikes. Hopefully the floodwaters will not rise again so that people can protect their production areas."

These days, just hearing news of a dike overflow or break makes people drop all their work and join hands to fix the problem.

Floods in the West are gentle, unlike flash floods in the North and Central regions. The flood season usually lasts from August to November, with water rising slowly along the river, bringing alluvium and aquatic products to the delta. Floods help to build up fields, wash away alum, and provide freshwater aquatic products for people. However, in recent years, due to the impact of hydroelectric dams, high tides, and climate change, floods are no longer stable, alluvium is reduced, aquatic products are less, and some years cause damage to farmers' property and crops.

Militia forces join hands to reinforce the dike

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh said: “When the incident occurred, people contributed money and labor to join hands with the local government to reinforce and protect the production area. I think that without the people's cooperation and consensus, the damage would be even greater. In the coming time, I hope that people will continue to work with the local government to strengthen inspections to protect crops and production areas. The Department is currently classifying, synthesizing, evaluating, and reviewing the damage to have timely support measures. Regarding the construction system, the Provincial People's Committee also directed implementation according to the motto "The State and the People work together"./.
