REDD+ is a global framework developed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to encourage developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, while conserving and enhancing forest carbon stocks through sustainable forest management.
At the meeting, the delegation focused on learning about the forest protection and development strategy of Son La province; assessing the experience of implementing REDD+ projects; identifying priority issues such as: Main drivers of deforestation and forest degradation; the situation of law enforcement on preventing and combating illegal logging; updating payments for forest environmental services. The delegation also proposed a field survey at Muong La Nature Reserve and Xuan Nha special-use forest, as a basis for determining activities within the framework of the project's pre-feasibility study.
Speaking at the meeting, comrade Nguyen Thanh Cong emphasized: Son La has a large area of natural forest, is an important area in biodiversity conservation and provides forest environmental services for the region. The pre-feasibility study of the REDD+ project in Son La is an important basis for building orientations and practical solutions, aiming at the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting and developing sustainable forests in the coming period.
He suggested that the provincial departments and branches closely coordinate with the working group to continue to study and evaluate in detail the feasibility of the project; submit to the Provincial People's Committee to clarify the evaluation procedures, develop implementation steps and plans for the project in the coming time, contributing to sustainable forest management, protection and development, improving people's livelihoods, and contributing to the common effort to respond to climate change.
