On October 17, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the Egyptian capital for important discussions. This marks the first time a high-ranking Iranian official has visited the Egyptian capital in over a decade, amid rising regional tensions as Israel continues its airstrikes on both Gaza and Lebanon, and threatens to attack Iran.

According to New Arab, discussions between the two countries will focus on the situation in the Red Sea and Yemen, particularly in light of Houthi attacks that have significantly impacted maritime traffic through the Suez Canal. They will also exchange views on the escalating situation in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, as well as measures to de-escalate regional tensions stemming from Israel's increased military actions.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced on October 16 that 16 people had been killed and 52 others injured in an Israeli airstrike targeting the government headquarters of Nabatieh, the capital of the province of the same name in southern Lebanon. Among the dead was Mayor Ahmad Kahil. This was the largest attack on a Lebanese government headquarters since Israel began its airstrike campaign.

The New Arab website suggests that Araghchi will convey a message from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Egyptian officials regarding concrete steps to reduce regional tensions, while emphasizing the role of bilateral cooperation during this challenging time.

According to Iran's ISNA news agency, Foreign Minister Araghchi is also expected to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during this visit.

Following his visit to Egypt, the Iranian diplomat is expected to continue his trip to Turkey. Over the past week, Mr. Araghchi has also made a series of diplomatic visits to several countries, including Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Oman, in an effort to find solutions to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.
