Household waste at the collection point in Son Bang village, Loc Ha commune, has accumulated into large piles, remaining unprocessed for over a month. Photo: Ha Phuong. This garbage dump is located right next to a residential area. Under hot weather conditions, the decomposition process occurs quickly, increasing the level of pollution.
Flies are multiplying in large numbers at the garbage collection site.
Inside the cold storage facility located next to the garbage dump owned by Mr. Tran Van Trung's family, flies swarm the walls and other items.
Mr. Tran Van Trung expressed his frustration, saying, "For over a month now, the garbage dump right next to the factory hasn't been cleaned up. Flies swarm in, and the stench is overwhelming. Especially when it rains, maggots even crawl into the building, forcing the factory to close for days and preventing production."
Besides the foul odor, the garbage dump has been continuously burning for several days. Thick smoke billows, enveloping the entire residential area, accompanied by a burning and putrid smell.
The piles of garbage caught fire, spreading to other areas. Ms. Tran Thi Minh (from Loc Ha commune) said: "Since the Lunar New Year of 2026, the amount of garbage has been accumulating day by day. Every two or three days, we see garbage being burned. The pungent, foul smell permeates our house; we have to keep the doors closed while eating or doing other activities, which is very inconvenient." Worryingly, the garbage dump is located right next to Thach Kim Secondary School, Thach Kim Primary School, and Kim Quang Pagoda. The learning environment and spiritual activities are also affected by smoke, dust, and the smell of garbage. Mr. Dang Tien Nam (from Loc Ha commune) said: “Every time the garbage is burned, we can't breathe. Especially near the school, students have to endure the foul smell and toxic smoke. We hope the local authorities will soon come up with a solution.”
Every day, large amounts of waste continue to be brought to the collection site by residents. Meanwhile, transportation for processing is disrupted, causing the amount of accumulated waste to grow larger and larger.
According to the Thach Kim Environmental Sanitation Service Cooperative (Loc Ha commune), the unit collects garbage 3-4 times a week on average. However, due to the Hong Loc commune landfill ceasing to accept waste and the Thach Lac commune treatment facility being overloaded, tens of tons of garbage have been accumulating at the garbage collection point for more than a month now. Ms. Tran Thi Tham, Director of Thach Kim Environmental Sanitation Service Cooperative (Loc Ha commune), said: “Currently, the amount of waste at the waste collection site in Son Bang village is estimated at tens of tons. The cooperative has to regularly educate and remind people to dispose of waste in the designated places and not to litter on the streets. Regarding the burning of waste, the specific cause has not yet been clearly determined. We hope the authorities will soon find a solution to transport the waste for processing.” The prolonged accumulation of waste in Loc Ha commune not only causes serious environmental pollution but also directly threatens the health of the local people. If left unaddressed, it will lead to many negative consequences and cause public discontent. Therefore, a fundamental and decisive solution is urgently needed to protect the local life and environment.
Currently, the accumulation of waste is a major problem in Loc Ha commune. The local government has signed a contract with Ha Tinh Urban Environment and Construction Joint Stock Company to collect, transport, and process waste. However, due to the increasing volume of waste generated and limited processing capacity, waste accumulation persists. The local authorities are contacting the waste treatment plant in Co Dam commune for assistance in receiving and processing waste. In the long term, Loc Ha commune will promote the development of waste sorting and processing models at the source to reduce the burden on the collection system and raise environmental awareness among residents.
