The woman who 'ignited' agricultural tourism.

The slopes of the Tam Dao mountain range, in La Bang commune, are not only famous for their endless green tea hills but also for preserving centuries-old traditional crafts. Taking advantage of this, Ms. Bui Thi Mai, Director of the May Suon Dong Cooperative, has developed an agricultural tourism model combined with organic tea production, offering authentic experiences for tourists while creating sustainable livelihoods.

Originating from traditional crafts

Born into a family with a long history of tea production, Ms. Mai quickly understood the value of each tea bud and each batch of tea processed with meticulous care and love for the craft. However, she realized that La Bang's potential lay not only in its tea products, but also in its local cultural values, natural landscape, and the lifestyle of its people closely connected to the tea hills.

She shared: "I want tourists coming to La Bang not only to enjoy a delicious cup of tea, but also to understand the hard work and dedication of the tea makers. Agricultural tourism helps us preserve our craft while also creating additional income for local women."

With that in mind, she boldly established the May Suon Dong Cooperative, applying a model that combines organic tea production with agricultural tourism development, opening up a new direction for women and the local community.

The effectiveness of the Dong Suong Cloud Cooperative model has been recognized by the authorities. Mr. Dang Thanh Tung, Chairman of the People's Committee of La Bang commune, said: "The commune has great potential for developing agricultural tourism, but it needs pioneering models to unlock that advantage. The Dong Suong Cloud Cooperative is an effective model, creating jobs for people, especially women, while promoting the local culture and distinctive products. The commune government always accompanies and supports the model to continue its sustainable development."

From clean agricultural products to experiential spaces.

In addition to focusing on tea, the May Suon Dong Cooperative also develops many other clean agricultural products such as wild vegetables, honey, herbal tea, and processed products. These products are showcased at the May Suon Dong homestay - a place that combines relaxation and unique cultural experiences.

At the homestay, visitors can stay in small houses nestled on the mountainside, watching clouds drift across the valley, and enjoying tea in a setting typical of the tea-growing region. The "a day as a tea grower" activity is especially popular with international tourists. Francis, a tourist from the Philippines, shared her experience in La Bang: "The air here is very fresh, and the scenery is stunning. Picking tea leaves myself and enjoying tea that I roasted myself was a very memorable experience for me when I came to May Suon Dong."

With this model, the cooperative not only brings economic value but also contributes to social welfare, especially enhancing the role of women in community development. Ms. Nguyen Thi Sao, a member of the cooperative, said: "I have worked at the cooperative for two years. The work suits my abilities and provides a stable income for my family. Thanks to the cooperative, I feel more confident and can contribute more to community activities."

From a small-scale model, the May Suon Dong Cooperative has now become a familiar destination for many domestic and international tourists. Its clean products, hands-on tea-making experiences, and local culture contribute to building a unique brand for La Bang, creating livelihoods for the people, preserving cultural identity, conserving traditional crafts, and spreading a positive image of the people of Thai Nguyen – sincere and hospitable.
