To serve the Lunar New Year market, peach growers in Co Dam commune (Nghi Xuan, Ha Tinh) are actively pruning branches, mounding roots... to help the trees bloom on time, bringing high economic value.
Mr. Hoang Ngoc Tra's family in Xuan Son village has nearly 1,300 peach trees.
The peach garden of nearly 1,300 trees, carefully cared for by Mr. Hoang Ngoc Tra's family (Xuan Son village), will be harvested this Tet holiday, expected to bring his family 600 - 700 million VND.
With many years of experience in growing peach trees, Mr. Tra said: Normally, in the middle of the 11th lunar month, growers will strip the leaves from peach trees, but depending on the actual situation, they will adjust accordingly. This year, the cold weather is late, and the weather is forecast to be warmer, so the "new coat" for peach trees to bloom on time will be delayed by a week. We are focusing on pruning old leaves, removing dry branches and taking care of the trees. Leaf stripping also varies depending on the age of the tree; on each tree, we must also choose to strip young, weak branches first, and old, strong branches later."
People actively take care of the peach blossoms in the hope that they will bloom on time, bringing high income.
These days, Ms. Phan Thi Lan (Xuan Son village) is actively weeding and taking care of her family's 300 peach trees in the garden, hoping that the peach trees will bloom beautifully, just in time for Tet. "Due to many reasons, last year's peach blossoms were not beautiful and the price was low, so the family decided not to sell them but to continue to take care of them to meet the needs of the 2024 Lunar New Year. Growing peach trees is not as difficult or expensive as other ornamental plants, but growers must monitor the weather, determine the age of the peach trees, and the type of peach trees to decide the time to carry out each stage. For trees showing signs of slow growth, I focus on fertilizing, and for trees that are growing too well, I have to slow them down by not fertilizing them," Ms. Lan shared.
Co Dam commune is known as the peach growing “capital” of Nghi Xuan district with nearly 100 households growing from 40 to 1,300 trees/household, mainly concentrated in Xuan Son village. Peach growing has long been associated with local people, bringing high economic value and creating the brand “Co Dam peach blossom” known to many people.
Peach blossoms in Co Dam commune are popular with customers because of their beautiful shape, large light pink flower buds...
According to the people, when the tree is 2-3 years old, it is harvested, so it must be planted in a "rolling" manner so that every year there will be peaches for sale on the market. To grow a beautiful peach tree, the grower must choose a good peach variety, graft the buds, shape it, combine it with the care process, fertilize, prune and strip the leaves at the appropriate times...
Peach blossoms in Co Dam commune have beautiful tree shapes, large flower buds, beautiful light pink petals... Although it is only the 11th lunar month, many traders have visited the garden, surveyed prices to prepare to supply the Tet market. Many peach branches with large roots and beautiful shapes have been ordered by customers.
"We are promoting the development of OCOP peach blossom products to affirm the local brand, while developing sustainably and increasing economic value for the people ," said Chairman of Co Dam Commune People's Committee Le Thanh Binh.
