According to Bloomberg sources, Robby Walker, one of the key personnel in Apple's AI division, is expected to leave the company in the near future.
Walker is one of a handful of employees who report directly to Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy John Giannandrea, who was in charge of Siri development before handing over the job to Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi earlier this year.
After leaving his role at Siri, Walker became one of Apple's senior executives. His AI division is developing a new search engine, using AI to compete with Perplexity and ChatGPT. The system is expected to launch in 2026.
Before leaving, Walker led the Answers, Information and Knowledge division. Walker's departure came after a series of upgrades to Apple Intelligence failed to be released on time, causing Apple to lose public credibility.
Walker plans to leave Apple next month, the source said, asking not to be named because the decision has not been announced. Apple also declined to comment on the matter.
The struggles in its AI division have weighed on Apple shares, which are down nearly 7% year-to-date.
While Walker’s scope and staff have shrunk significantly in recent months, he remains a major influence on Apple’s AI strategy. However, he is just one of many executives and engineers who have joined the wave of departures.
Previously, Ruoming Pang, who was in charge of the AI modeling team at Apple, left the company to move to Meta, taking many researchers and engineers with him. In August, the head of the search service Frank Chu also left to join Meta.
During an internal meeting in March, Walker dismissed criticism surrounding the delay in releasing a new version of Siri.
“We swam hundreds of miles, even broke the Guinness World Record for the distance, and still didn’t make it to Hawaii. We weren’t attacked for our swimming skills, we were attacked for not getting there,” Walker stressed.
