He fought in the tank and armored forces during the war years in the battlefields: Khe Sanh, Route 9-Southern Laos (1970-1971), Quang Tri (1972), Central Highlands and Ho Chi Minh Campaign (1974-1975).
After 1975, he studied at Nguyen Du Writing School, Course I, University of Culture, then Gorky Literature Academy, worked as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Army Literature Magazine , Editor-in-Chief of Literature Newspaper, and participated in the Executive Committee of the Writers' Association for terms 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 until his retirement.
Poet Huu Thinh has published 20 collections of poems, epic poems, memoirs, essays, and literary criticism and has been awarded many prizes by the Writers' Association; the Asean Literature Prize; the State Prize for Literature and Arts; and the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts.
The ceremony to receive the Second Class Independence Medal of poet Huu Thinh will take place solemnly in early May 2022 at the Hanoi Opera House with the poetic play Road to the City and an art program.
