The "Vietnamese Quintessence" award, organized by Dai Doan Ket newspaper, aims to promote the role of culture and art as an important element in the sustainable development of the country, contributing to nurturing national spirit and inspiring aspirations for progress in the new era.
In the "Stage Excellence" category, "Chi Pheo's Dream" competes with other strong contenders: the musical "Fire from the Earth" (directed by Meritorious Artist Cao Ngoc Anh - Youth Theatre), the traditional opera "Heavy Burden of the Nation" (directed by People's Artist Thuy Mui - Hanoi Traditional Opera Theatre), the modern opera "Eclipse" (directed by Meritorious Artist Le Nguyen Dat - Sen Viet Theatre), and the play "The 72nd Letter" (directed by People's Artist Le Tien Tho - Le Ngoc Theatre).
These are monumental theatrical works, full of experimentation, creativity, and professional success, as well as being beloved by the public. They have been performed numerous times, bringing positive value to audiences over the years.
The judging panel for this year's award includes: People's Artist Vuong Duy Bien, People's Artist Tran Ly Ly, painter Vi Kien Thanh, Meritorious Artist and director Bui Tuan Dung, musician Huy Tuan, musician Nguyen Hai Phong, film critic Le Hong Lam, journalist Nguyen Dang Khang, and writer Nguyen Quynh Trang.
"Chí Phèo's Dream" is inspired by the work "Chí Phèo" by writer Nam Cao. With 90 minutes of music combined with theatrical performance, it will take the audience through a range of emotions: from romantic and ethereal to intense and dramatic. On the Broadway stage, Chí Phèo is once again reborn within himself, along with a beautiful dream of a virtuous life and a yearning for a normal life with his kind wife and children, in a simple thatched house.
And "Chi Pheo's Dream" has, to date, established "firsts," demonstrating the determination and efforts of the Thang Long Music and Dance Theatre team. That is, for the first time, a Broadway musical has been adapted from Vietnamese literature. While many literary works have been adapted for film and stage, "Chi Pheo's Dream" is the first musical adaptation.
For the first time, a musical of international caliber is being produced entirely by Vietnamese people. According to musician Duong Cam: "Up until now, we have produced musicals, however, from the perspective of a musician, I believe those musicals have not yet reached the 'Broadway standard'. We are striving to transform 'Chi Pheo's Dream' into a 'musical made in Vietnam' brand."
With its high professional quality, having won the Excellence Award at the National Professional Music and Dance Festival and having been performed many nights at the Ho Guom Theater with consistently full houses, "Chi Pheo's Dream" is not only a remarkable work of art. Musical theater is also a highlight of Hanoi's culture in 2025, and importantly, it contributes to the development of the capital's cultural industry. This is considered a challenging new direction, but one that has brought brilliant success to the Thang Long Music and Dance Theater both now and in the near future.
The success of "Chi Pheo's Dream" is the result of the talent and dedication of all the artists, actors, and staff of the Thang Long Music and Dance Theatre, along with the production team. This is the "dream" that People's Artist Tan Minh (Director of the Theatre) and musician Duong Cam had cherished for a long time. They had already begun to bring musicals to the theatre's stage during previous professional music and dance festivals and competitions, such as "Returning Home" (gold medal in 2015), "Hanoi Day, Month, Year" (2018), "I Read the Newspaper This Morning" (2021),… however, it was only with "Chi Pheo's Dream" that this "dream" became a reality, as it is a complete musical in the truest sense of the word.

The play not only received enthusiastic acclaim from the audience but was also highly praised by critics. To create the play's appeal, besides the dedication and commitment of People's Artist Tan Minh (artistic director) and musician Duong Cam (General Director - Music Director), it was the collective effort of a large team, including playwright Dinh Tien Dung, stage director and musician, Meritorious Artist Phung Tien Minh, and artists such as People's Artist Hoang Anh Tu, Meritorious Artist Khanh Hoa, Bach Nguyen, Khanh Linh, Linh 3T, Xuan Vuong, Cao Tung, Xuan Hoa, Dong Hung, Thai Phuong, Hong Dung, Quang Dat, Nguyen Hieu, Duc Tho, Ngoc Hieu, musicians, singers, dancers, sound and lighting technicians, and stage crew… The artists truly contributed their efforts to the success of the musical "Chi Pheo's Dream".
