Minamino traveled to the United States with the Japanese national team. |
According to Japanese media, coach Hajime Moriyasu has asked AS Monaco to allow Minamino to join the national team for the duration of the tournament. The Ligue 1 club has agreed to this request, opening up the opportunity for the 30-year-old striker to continue playing alongside the "Samurai Blue".
Coach Moriyasu highly values Minamino's influence in the dressing room. The Japanese coach believes that the experience, fighting spirit, and personality of the Monaco star will help strengthen the entire team in their quest to conquer the 2026 World Cup.
Previously, Minamino was not included in Japan's 26-man World Cup squad after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last December. The lengthy recovery process meant the former Liverpool player was unable to regain his best form before the tournament began.
This is considered a major loss for the Japanese national team, as Minamino has played a crucial role in coach Moriyasu's squad for many years. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he wore the number 10 jersey and was one of the most experienced players on the team from the Land of the Rising Sun.
According to the plan, Minamino will join the Japanese national team in Nashville (USA) to provide moral support and accompany his younger teammates in the upcoming tournament.
Wearing the national team jersey, Minamino has scored 26 goals in 73 appearances. This season, he has contributed 4 goals in 21 matches across all competitions for Monaco.
