On May 25th, the United Kingdom recorded its highest May temperature ever, with temperatures near London reaching 33.5 degrees Celsius. According to the UK Met Office, this temperature surpassed the previous record of 32.8 degrees Celsius set in 1922 and 1944.

Earlier that day, the Met Office predicted that Britain could experience its hottest May on record, with temperatures in some areas potentially reaching 35 degrees Celsius, as the country faced what was described as an "unprecedented" heatwave for the start of summer.

Last week, the UK government 's climate advisers warned that the country "is built for a climate that no longer exists," and called for adjustments to infrastructure such as schools and hospitals to adapt to global warming.

On May 22, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued orange and yellow heat warnings for many areas of England, amid forecasts of further rising temperatures and the potential impact on vulnerable populations.

In France , the Meteo France meteorological agency said the country continues to experience unusually hot weather after many areas recorded record high temperatures for May over the past weekend.

According to Meteo France, on May 24th, at least 10 locations recorded their highest temperatures ever for May, including northwestern coastal towns such as Lorient and Noirmoutier. In Paris, the temperature on May 23rd exceeded 30 degrees Celsius for the first time this year, reaching 31.9 degrees Celsius.

Several areas in Brittany remain under a yellow heat alert – level 2/4 in the French warning system – for the second consecutive day. Meteo France said this is the first time a yellow heat alert has been issued in May since the system was established in 2004.

The French Ministry of Sport , Youth and Community Life also urged people to exercise extreme caution when participating in outdoor sports activities in unusually high temperatures.

The warning was issued after a participant in the Pyrénéenne race in Paris died on May 24th. On the same day, another sporting event in Maisons-Alfort, Val-de-Marne province, was also temporarily suspended at the request of authorities after approximately 10 athletes were hospitalized in critical condition.

Health experts warn that in extreme heat, sports activities can be dangerous even for young and healthy people, with the most worrying risk being heatstroke due to exertion.

According to Politico, Western European countries are bracing for an extreme heatwave this week, as a "heat dome" phenomenon is pushing May temperatures to record highs.

Spain and Portugal will be among the hardest-hit areas. Some regions in Portugal are expected to record temperatures close to 40°C, while southern Spain is forecast to reach 38°C.

On May 25th, Spain issued a yellow heat warning for several areas in the north.
