This year, in addition to fresh pine trees and branches imported from Denmark or Kunming (China), which are expensive and appeal to a niche market, fragrant cypress trees, with their lush green color, distinctive aroma, ease of care, and long shelf life, are being sought after by many.
While choosing a fragrant cypress tree to decorate her home at a nursery in Nghi An commune, Ms. Tuyet Mai, a customer, said: “My family isn’t Catholic, but we have young children. Christmas is a time to decorate the house, bringing a fresh and warm atmosphere to the family, so I chose to buy a medium-sized fragrant cypress tree for decoration. The price of this 1.2m tall tree with accessories is just over 1 million VND. Compared to real Danish pines, it’s very cheap, and compared to plastic pines, this fragrant cypress tree has much more meaning.”

Mr. Le Van Khang, owner of Ca Garden Green Garden nursery in Nghi An commune (Vinh City), said: “This year, understanding people's preferences, we started importing fragrant cypress trees of various sizes from mid-November. From small ones for tabletops to large trees up to 2 meters tall. Prices range from 90,000 VND to 2 million VND per tree (depending on the type). We estimate that during this year's Christmas season, our nursery will sell about 1,000 fragrant cypress trees of various types.”
According to Mr. Khang, this type of fragrant pine is imported from Da Lat. It has a round canopy, healthy branches, and a fragrant essential oil scent that repels mosquitoes, making it very popular. The price is cheaper compared to fresh Danish pine or plastic pine, and it suits the "green consumption" trend.

Having been in the business of importing fresh cypress trees and pine branches for 3 years, this year, when the price of Danish pine branches increased, Ms. Tu Dung (Ngo Gia Tu Street, Quan Bau Ward, Vinh City) switched to selling fragrant cypress trees.
Ms. Dung said that this year, fragrant pine trees of various sizes are also very popular. Especially the smaller ones, 60-80cm tall, decorated with dried bark, bells, pearls, pine cones, etc., are selling for 80,000-100,000 VND, suitable for decorating desks, bedrooms, and family spaces. In just the past half month, she has sold about 300 fragrant pine trees of various sizes.

At the same time, Ms. Tu Dung also arranged and decorated the sales point into a space filled with Christmas atmosphere for customers to take photos. Ms. Tu Dung said: “This is the first year we have offered this service, but it has been very popular. Because you don't have to go far to get beautiful photos; the space is full of Christmas atmosphere, you can enjoy the scenery, take photos to post on social media, and preserve beautiful moments. Meanwhile, the prices are very reasonable. From November 22nd until now, we estimate that there have been about 500 visitors coming to visit and take photos.”

Capitalizing on this trend, cafes have also decorated their spaces with colorful Christmas decorations to attract customers. Some places offer free drinks, while others charge a fee for taking photos, ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 VND per session (depending on customer requests for additional photographers or accessories).
Besides photography services, Christmas shops also organize workshops guiding participants in making Christmas items with a variety of activities. For example: making Christmas trees from velour wire; making wreaths; making Christmas greeting cards; making cookies with Christmas motifs… attracting a large number of children and young people.

“Making a Christmas product with my own hands to reward myself or give to friends and family is very meaningful. Meanwhile, the cost of learning materials isn't too much, only about 150,000 - 250,000 VND per session depending on the specific service,” said Phuong Trang, a participant in a workshop on making velour Christmas trees at a shop on Vo Thi Sau Street (Truong Thi Ward, Vinh City).
