A group of students from Phan Thiet University connected with a group of students from the University of Education to hold a discussion online about human compassion.
Student A, Teacher Training University:
- Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh was a renowned writer, poet, researcher, and social activist both domestically and internationally. He delivered many insightful and heartfelt lectures on love from the heart. He often reiterated the teachings of the sages, emphasizing that humanity was created by nature to love one another. Love creates strength and holiness, enabling people to overcome nature and both internal and external evil!
Student B from the Teacher Training University continued:
- Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh not only cited Buddhist teachings but also quoted Ho Chi Minh , considering him a "saint" of compassion. Ho Chi Minh embodied the struggle and sacrifice for compassion, a compassion that transformed society, simultaneously fighting for and striving towards all that is good, just, and fraternal.
Student C from the Teacher Training University:
- Teachers wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to their beloved students, doctors treat the sick as President Ho Chi Minh taught, "A good doctor is like a loving mother," and like all other professions, they are always deeply imbued with compassion.
Student A, Phan Thiet University:
- This week, there have been several unpleasant stories here and there about teachers' lack of affection for their students. A 12th-grade female student at Dan Phuc High School in Hanoi caused a major incident simply because she made a birthday cake for the class in a location different from what the teacher had instructed, not matching the design the teacher had described. The student knelt before the class, begging the teacher for forgiveness, then fainted. The teacher then dragged her into the classroom, uttering very harsh words. Birthdays are supposed to be fun and filled with warmth and affection, but if it turns into this, what's left of that affection?
Student A. continued the story:
- And that's not all, there's the story of an English teacher who harshly scolded a male student in front of the class, insulting his dignity and showing no compassion whatsoever. A fourth-grade student was beaten by his teacher, leaving him with bruises on his back, for not completing his assigned homework. A doctor specializing in oncology shamelessly seduced the beautiful daughter of a cancer patient, and the girl herself reported him when she was pushed to the brink. Where is the "compassionate doctor" in all of this?
The student group leader from the University of Education opened her smartphone and reread the text messages between a kindergarten teacher and a female parent – the mother of Minh Tam, who was not yet 5 years old. On one side, the kindergarten teacher sent crude, empty messages with unreasonable and unloving comments about the child. On the other side, the parent, the child's mother, used polite and gentle language. Every day at school, the teacher inexplicably pinched the child's cheeks and bottom. In the end, the mother had to meet with the principal to request that the child be withdrawn from school and transferred to another class.
Group leader of Phan Thiet University students:
- The stories we've just mentioned about the "betrayal" of love, though few in number, are no longer isolated incidents reflecting the lack of standards among those who should be exemplary in their conduct and truly embody the ideal of love. A lifetime's reputation is suddenly shattered by personal desires, by a lack of self-control, allowing the inherent evil within them to run rampant.
The Vietnamese people, steadfast, indomitable, heroic, and possessing unparalleled strength, are the embodiment of the spirit of unity and love: "Even in difficult times, people of the same nation must love one another."
The education and training sector, the medical sector (and many other professions) have always valued culture and ethical standards in all conduct. The story of teachers being violent and abusive towards students, and doctors being unfaithful to patients across the country, has been and is being rectified, so that evil has no place to take root, and goodness and beauty can always spread. Ethical standards in conduct are what "Culture illuminates the path for the nation" (Ho Chi Minh), a lesson for a lifetime, a lesson deeply ingrained in a life that is beautiful yet not without its storms…
