Many May temperature records were broken.

The prolonged heatwave from May 22nd to 27th caused many localities in northern Vietnam to record the highest May temperatures on record.

From May 22nd to 27th, Northern and Central Vietnam experienced a severe heatwave due to the influence of a hot low-pressure area from the west combined with the strong Foehn wind effect. Peaking on May 24th, Hanoi, as well as the Northern Delta, the midland, and the area from Thanh Hoa to Hue City, reached temperatures of 38-40 degrees Celsius, with many places exceeding 40 degrees Celsius – an exceptionally intense heatwave.

According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, a number of meteorological stations recorded the highest temperatures in May ever recorded. In Quang Ninh, the Uong Bi station reached 38 degrees Celsius on May 25th, surpassing the previous record high of 37.5 degrees on May 16th, 2013. The Hiep Hoa station ( Bac Ninh ) reached 39.7 degrees, exceeding the previous record of 39 degrees Celsius set on May 19th, 2019. The Bac Giang station reached 39.4 degrees, surpassing the 39.1 degrees Celsius recorded on May 21st, 2020.

The Bac Ninh weather station reached 40.5 degrees Celsius and the Hai Duong station reached 39.6 degrees Celsius, both equaling the highest values ever recorded in May.

Hanoi is the epicenter of the heatwave, with maximum temperatures fluctuating between 39-40 degrees Celsius for several days. At the Lang weather station in the heart of the capital, the temperature on May 26th reached 41.1 degrees Celsius, only slightly lower than the record of 41.3 degrees Celsius in 2019. This temperature is also close to the highest annual record for the Lang station on June 4th, 2017, which was 41.8 degrees Celsius.

According to the meteorological agency, in addition to the impact of the hot low-pressure area and the Foehn wind, Hanoi is also affected by the urban heat island effect. The inner city has a high density of concrete, many asphalt roads, high-rise buildings, vehicles, and heat emissions from daily life and services. These factors cause heat to accumulate strongly during the day and be released slowly at night.

Forecast for the afternoon of May 27th: The Northern Delta, Phu Tho , and the provinces from Thanh Hoa to Hue City will continue to experience intense and exceptionally intense heat, with temperatures generally ranging from 38-40 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas. The lowest humidity during the day will only reach 40-45%. Other areas in the Northern region and the South Central coastal region will maintain intense heat, with some areas experiencing exceptionally intense heat, with temperatures ranging from 37-39 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 40 degrees Celsius locally.

From May 28th, a weak mass of cool air from mainland China moved southward, weakening the hot low-pressure area in the west. The heatwave in the North narrowed, concentrating in the midland and lowland areas with temperatures commonly ranging from 35-37 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 37 degrees Celsius in some places.

Central Vietnam, especially from Thanh Hoa to Hue City, continues to experience intense heat with temperatures commonly ranging from 37-39 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 39 degrees Celsius in some areas. The meteorological agency forecasts that from May 29th, the widespread heatwave will end in the North, while its intensity will gradually decrease in Central Vietnam.

Prolonged hot weather combined with low humidity increases the risk of fires in residential areas due to increased electricity demand, and also poses a risk of forest fires. Extreme weather can also cause dehydration, exhaustion, and health problems for those working or engaging in outdoor activities for extended periods.
