The car stopped in front of my grandparents' house, my father only had time to have a quick lunch and then turned the car back to the city. At 4 pm, without waiting for the sun to cool down, outside the gate, I could see the silhouettes of children and their small calls. Trong jumped out right away, still wearing sandals, his mouth wide open with a big smile. Some of the children were holding rattan baskets, some were carrying bamboo strips, some were wearing hats, some were bareheaded. They walked in a line towards the vast green rice fields, following the undulating road. Suddenly, the oldest child in the lead jumped into the field and the children behind followed. No one spoke to each other, their hands digging into the mud to catch crabs. Suddenly, one of the children shouted, "Hey, there's a snake!" Trong was startled and jumped onto the shore, the whole group of 4 or 5 children jumped after him, panting. The oldest child asked, "What kind of snake is that? Did you find a snake?" A timid voice from the group of children answered, I touched something slippery and soft, I don't know if it was a snake or an eel, I shouted to be sure. You crazy person, you scared us all, we jumped up, the crabs and fish heard and ran away... losing their shoes. The whole group burst out laughing, their laughter echoed loudly in the wind throughout the field.
The children were tired and bored from the sun, so they invited each other to go swimming in the river. Also two years ago, during the first long summer vacation, Trong was taught swimming by his grandfather. Back in town, he also learned swimming skills from the school's gym teacher, so he was very confident when going into the water. The river water was cool, with waves of fresh water breaking and splashing into Trong's eyes and face, extremely refreshing. Trong swam "full" until the sun completely set.
On a cool summer night, the wind from the fields rushed through the small winding paths into the garden, caressing the persimmon and custard apple trees. Grandpa shouted, Trong, bring the mat from the corner of the house here, he spread the mat out in the yard to watch the moon and stars. He turned on the electric fan to the lowest setting to let the wind blow away the mosquitoes, Grandpa lay outside, Trong and his cousin lay in the middle, grandma sat right next to him. The two "young men" of the same age stretched out their arms and legs, listening to Grandpa tell stories about the stars. The dark night sky was decorated with thousands of twinkling stars, Grandpa's voice was near and far, then seemed to... disappear into Trong's sleepiness. In his dream, the boy was... making a schedule for tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, what to do in the following brilliant summer days.
