Ha Giang province has over 277km of border shared with Yunnan and Guangxi provinces (China). After the war to defend the northern border, the entire province has over 85,000 hectares of land contaminated by unexploded bombs, mines, and other explosive remnants.
In late March, when the lingering chill of the season still stung our skin, we visited the officers and soldiers of Brigade 543, Military Region 2. They were implementing Component Project No. 2 on clearing bombs, mines, and explosive ordnance along the Vietnam-China border in Cao Ma Po commune, Quan Ba district.
Cao Mã Pờ commune has over 28km of border shared with Ma Ly Pho district, Yunnan province, China. Surveys conducted in the two border villages of Chín Chu Lìn and Vàng Chá Phìn in Cao Mã Pờ commune show that there are currently approximately 210 bombs, mines, and explosive materials per hectare.
Lieutenant Nguyen Van Hung, Deputy Commander of the bomb and explosive ordnance clearance site of Brigade 543, Military Region 2, said: "Regarding the task of clearing bombs and explosive ordnance in Ha Giang province, the Party Committee and Command of Brigade 543, Military Region 2, always pay attention to, encourage, and create favorable conditions for each officer and soldier to perform their duties."
It is known that before directly participating in the mission in Cao Ma Po commune, Brigade 543 organized training for all its bomb and explosive ordnance disposal forces at the Engineering Technical College. During the training, the unit's officers and soldiers thoroughly grasped the procedures and sequence of steps in carrying out the mission. Experienced officers will participate in missions in difficult and complex terrains so that the soldiers can learn and gain experience, thereby performing the mission better.
Lieutenant Cao Tran Tung, Team Leader of the bomb and explosive ordnance disposal team of Brigade 543, shared: “The terrain of the border communes in Ha Giang province is extremely complex, with steep slopes, making movement and maneuvering to the task area extremely difficult. However, each officer and soldier of the Engineering Corps of the unit has clearly defined their nhiệm vụ, strictly adhering to safety rules and the sequence of steps in bomb and explosive ordnance disposal. The search, clearance, collection, classification, and disposal of bombs, mines, and explosive ordnance are carried out by the unit in accordance with regulations and safety standards.”
Lieutenant Cao Tran Tung reported that after decades buried underground, bombs, mines, and explosive devices often become deformed, making it difficult to distinguish the location of the fuses and detonators, thus increasing their danger. The mission is carried out with caution and high concentration by the officers and soldiers, with the leading group clearing the way and the following group searching, creating a protective shield for the entire team. Because even a small mistake or a few seconds of inattention could result in casualties.
In addition to carrying out their professional duties, the units tasked with clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance also coordinate with the Border Guard forces of Ha Giang province, as well as local Party committees and authorities, to disseminate information and educate the public about the dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance. Furthermore, the units effectively implement on-site logistical support, reinforce barracks, and engage in short-term agricultural production to ensure a food supply for the troops.
Today, in the course of their duties, the soldiers of Brigade 543, Military Region 2, always remember Uncle Ho's teaching, "Every task must be completed, every difficulty must be overcome," to fulfill the hope that every land where they have left their footprints will no longer be filled with the sound of bombs and bullets, and that the people will truly be safe.
From 2020 to 2025, Ha Giang province is implementing a project to clear unexploded ordnance and landmines remaining from the war. In phase 1, eight units, with thousands of officers and soldiers participating, cleared landmines and unexploded ordnance from an area of over 1,700 hectares in high-altitude areas of Thanh Duc, Thanh Thuy, and Xin Chai communes in Vi Xuyen district. Phase 2 of the project will carry out landmine and unexploded ordnance clearance on an area of 1,500 hectares in Minh Tan commune in Vi Xuyen district and Cao Ma Po and Ta Van communes in Quan Ba district.
