Recently, many violations in the land sector in Dak Ha district (Kon Tum) have been pointed out by relevant agencies and have not yet been resolved. Are these actions in accordance with the law? This is the question currently being raised by public opinion in Dak Ha district. Visiting Khanh Son today, it's easy to see vast durian orchards along with many multi-million dollar houses. A significant number of these belong to young millionaires from ethnic minority groups.
We arrived at the particularly impoverished village of Ko Róa, Sơn Lâm commune, and were surprised by the impressive estate of Cao Thanh Hải (born in 1989) - a Raglay farmer and millionaire.
Born and raised in a poor family in Son Lam commune, with a strong desire to become wealthy through agriculture in his hometown, Mr. Hai has continuously sought out, learned, researched, and applied organic durian farming methods to develop his economy. Mr. Hai has taken advantage of every opportunity to learn, from training courses to workshops from leading experts in the industry.
Mr. Hai said: "My family owns 3 hectares of durian trees. To date, more than 300 trees have yielded fruit. Last season, my family earned over 2 billion VND; after deducting expenses, the profit was nearly 1.5 billion VND. Thanks to two durian harvests, my family's life has improved significantly, and we've been able to build a spacious and comfortable house. In the future, I will continue to invest in developing organic durian cultivation on all 3 hectares to increase the selling price and aim for export."
According to Mr. Hai, while last year his family harvested only about 10 tons from their approximately 3-hectare plot, this year they have been able to harvest nearly 20 tons. Notably, this year about 70% of the trees in his orchard have borne fruit. He anticipates that next year his family will have managed to get 100% of the durian trees to bear fruit.
After saying goodbye to Mr. Hai, we returned to Son Trung commune to visit the fruit tree cultivation and livestock farming model of Ms. Mau Thi Hiem (born in 1990) in Ta Nia village. Ms. Hiem said: "My family has 1 hectare of durian trees that are currently being harvested. Last season, we earned nearly 400 million VND. Besides growing durian, my husband and I also dug a pond to raise carp and tilapia; and raise black pigs… each year we earn more than 100 million VND."
Not far from Ms. Hiem's house is the house of Ms. Tro Thi Hop (born in 1991) in Chi Chay village, known for her successful business in Son Trung commune. Talking to us, Ms. Hop recalled: "In 2009, I got married and lived with my parents. Initially, my family was often short of money, so I had to save every penny and borrow 8 million dong from the District Social Policy Bank, and another 20 million dong from relatives to start my business. I invested in building pigpens and buying 10 piglets."
"A few years ago, seeing many people in the commune successfully growing durian, I boldly converted my mixed orchard to durian cultivation, then continued to develop livestock farming, grocery business, and traditional rice wine making. Each year, my family earns more than 600 million VND," Ms. Hiem further shared.
In Ba Cum Bac commune, Mr. Vu Van Vinh is also considered a typical young farmer millionaire in the area. Mr. Vinh said: "This year, many trees in my orchard are bearing fruit for the first time, some trees yielding nearly 100 kg of fruit. Larger trees bring in revenue of 15-20 million VND per tree. But achieving that result is not easy. Durian trees are really difficult to care for; planting them is easy, but getting them to bear fruit and produce fragrant, sweet fruit is a whole process of monitoring and learning from experience in my own orchard," Mr. Vinh shared.
Currently, in Khanh Son district, there are many ethnic minority households that are successful in production and business, earning incomes ranging from hundreds of millions to several billion dong per year. Talking to them, we sensed a change in their mindset; they no longer rely on government support policies but are determined to overcome their own limitations, working diligently to become wealthy in their homeland.
These millionaires not only enriched themselves but also spearheaded poverty reduction efforts in their localities. They serve as shining examples for the community to learn from and emulate, empowering them to improve their lives through self-reliance. They also care for and support other impoverished households, sharing their business experience, crop and livestock farming techniques, and even providing capital and job opportunities to help others escape poverty.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Khanh Son district, affirmed: To lift Khanh Son out of poverty by the end of 2024, a large part of the success is due to the self-reliance of the people themselves and the successful production and business households. They are the driving force that inspires the entire community to strive for progress, helping many ethnic minority households overcome the mentality of waiting and relying on state support, and rise out of poverty and become wealthy.
