Joyful songs for life

Nature and its creatures, including adorable little birds, have sometimes left a deep impression on artists. Among the many songs that resonate with listeners, there are some that subtly evoke the image and vibrant sounds of countless tiny birds.

The lively sounds

"Oh, Beloved Life," a very famous song by composer Nguyen Ngoc Thien, leads listeners through the image and song of a young bird on an early morning. The composer wants to convey through the bird's chirping words of faith and love for life and for people, with genuine expressions of affection: "There's a little bird / chirping as if wanting to express /…/ Oh little bird, please send this message / A song of faith and love in everyone's heart."

Since the late 1970s, the song "This Earth Belongs to Us," with lyrics by Dinh Hai and music by composer Truong Quang Luc, has been loved by many generations of teenagers. The song, with its beautiful and evocative lyrics, has been given wings by its lively melody. The peaceful birdsong and the gentle cooing of doves resonate deeply in people's hearts: "This Earth belongs to us / A green ball flying in the blue sky / Oh dove, your cooing is so loving / Oh seagull, your wings flutter over the waves."

Composer Tran Hoan also wrote the song "Spring Love Song." That song describes the melodious chirping of birds, and perhaps from that sound, people feel as if the sky is bluer and higher. "Oh my dear, spring has arrived on the branches/ The birds' sweet chirping makes the sky so blue."

Sharing the sentiment of welcoming spring, overcoming difficulties and hardships, composer Tran Chung expressed his feelings through lyrics looking towards the future, with the hands of people working together to build a new life: "Through so much suffering / we see the joyful season as swallows fly back, chirping across the sky / Birds sing to greet the hands building on high floors, do you see?" (Spring Has Arrived).

Another joyful love song, imbued with the gentle colors of spring, is filled with the cheerful chirping of birds, blending with the voice of a young woman, adding beauty and vibrancy to the spring season: "The birds' songs bring joy to life / Your singing makes me love you even more / The beautiful spring is coming to my heart" (Gentle Colors of Spring - Composer Nguyen Nam).

Going back in time, there were cadres who participated in the resistance and endured days of struggle in prison, who once sang the beautiful lyrics of the song "Song of Hope" by composer Van Ky: "Pairs of birds fly away, their songs resounding / The birds' wings flutter in the spring breeze / Sending loving words to the South, our homeland / Telling that we miss you day and night." The lyrics carry a strong belief in a bright future, with the radiant light of a new horizon tomorrow.

And then there are the cheerful, lively sounds of birdsong and the buzzing of cicadas in the forest, filling the soldier's soul with joy. Composer Hoang Viet conveyed these joyful feelings of the soldiers on their march through the song "Forest Music": "Cuckoo, cuckoo, forest birds sing in the sun / Listen, listen, the cicadas chirp incessantly."

At different times of the day, the lyrics of the song also differ as the songwriter writes about the birds. If in the morning, it's the joyful chirping that makes the long journey seem shorter; then in the afternoon, it's the call of the flock. The song "First Spring" by songwriter Tuan Khanh has lines like: "My heart always remembers you when the evening falls and the birds call their flock" and: "Waiting for the morning to come so the birds sing, making the long journey seem not so far."

In the musical piece "A Painting of the Countryside," composer Van Phung also contributed the joyful chirping of birds. These tiny birds, carefree, fly on the branches, sharing their thoughts with each other, keeping the countryside peaceful like a picturesque ink painting: "The birds, the young birds, are chirping and singing / Their wings gently fluttering over the branches."

In the beautiful highland city of Da Lat, the harmonious songs of birds are a common sight. The song "Longing for the Cold Land" by composer Minh Ky evokes beautiful imagery and resonant sounds for listeners: "Rugged streams and rocks, leaves intertwined with beautiful flowers / with gently falling blue mist, with a thousand songs of birds."

Homeland always remains in everyone's heart, especially for those who, due to circumstances, have to live far from home. For musician Tu Huy, the call of the cuckoo bird will forever be a beloved part of his childhood memories: "The call of the cuckoo bird evokes so much nostalgia" (My Childhood Homeland).

However, it's not just about lively melodies. There are also songs with the melancholic sound of birdsong.

Sad songs

Composer Tran Thien Thanh, a native of Binh Thuan province, composed many songs that left an indelible mark on the hearts of music lovers nationwide, including the song "Han Mac Tu". Inspired by the beautiful yet tragic love story between the talented poet Han Mac Tu and the beautiful Mong Cam, the composer revisited the old Ong Hoang Pavilion and wrote these poignant lyrics: "The moon hangs obliquely, the long sandy shore becomes even more desolate / The birds' cries are mournful, like sobs under the misty sky."

In another scenario, after a breakup, on a rainy day, listening to the nightingale's song, the girl feels: The song is still very gentle, but why does it sound so sad? Could this be the lingering feeling of longing for someone, the remaining essence of a passionate love? Composer Duong Thu wrote about this sentiment in his song "Nightingale Singing in the Rain": "The rain falls outside, the wind and rain seem colder / A nightingale sings in the rain, so sad. My longing for you on this rainy day, my longing for you is so deep and heavy," along with: "Oh, in the rain, the nightingale still sings so gently, so gently / On my lips, the lost love still lingers, so intensely."

Another love story ends in heartbreak when affection fades, and passions are like water flowing under a bridge. He, once a strong bird, now has weary wings, not knowing where to fly. The song "For a Lost Love" by composer Hoang Nguyen has these lyrics: "Now I am like a bird / with weary wings, not knowing where to fly?"

It turns out that these small, charming birds have left a lasting impression on the hearts of many musicians. Life is full of emotions, and songs carry many feelings. Many songs feature the cheerful chirping of birds from all over the country; yet, there are also melancholic songs echoing in the stillness, reflecting the heavy hearts of people burdened with worries. These tiny creatures, however, still carry hope into poetry and music, lingering in people's hearts through time.
