Dr. Nguyen Hoang Bao Ngoc, Head of the Nephrology - Urology - Dialysis Department at Can Tho City General Hospital, said that in addition to the two long-established kidney replacement methods – conventional hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis – the department is gradually implementing new cutting-edge techniques to help end-stage renal failure patients maintain life and improve their quality of life, such as: high-quality hemodialysis, online HDF ultrafiltration, hemoadsorption dialysis, plasma filtration, and machine-assisted peritoneal dialysis. Notably, Can Tho City General Hospital recently launched kidney transplantation. Compared to cyclical dialysis, kidney transplantation offers superior benefits because transplant patients' health improves almost to normal, eliminating dependence on machines and requiring only three weekly visits to the hospital for dialysis. This reduced dependence on the hospital improves the psychological well-being of patients and their families. Patients can return to normal work and daily life, and their reproductive function is improved. Kidney transplantation restores a true quality of life for patients.
According to Dr. Nguyen Hoang Bao Ngoc, not all patients with end-stage renal failure are immediately eligible for kidney transplantation. Kidney transplantation is indicated when the patient has end-stage chronic renal failure (glomerular filtration rate <15 ml/min), their overall condition is suitable for surgery; there are no contraindications (infection, uncontrolled cancer, etc.); and a suitable kidney source is available (living or brain-dead donor).
“The ‘golden time’ for a transplant is when the patient is not too debilitated, and their health has been thoroughly assessed and prepared. The success of kidney transplants at Can Tho City General Hospital is not only a professional advancement but also opens up new hope for thousands of kidney failure patients in the Mekong Delta,” shared Dr. Nguyen Hoang Bao Ngoc.
