According to UN News, countries adopted 17 SDGs in 2015 with a promise to leave no one behind. Among the goals set out are ending extreme poverty and hunger, as well as ensuring that no one goes hungry by 2030. Other goals include ensuring access to clean water, safe sanitation, clean energy, universal quality education, gender equality, etc.
The 17 SDGs are made up of 169 sub-goals. However, Mr. Guterres warned that only 15% of these targets are on track and many others are in the opposite direction. Crises and challenges have reduced attention and funding for efforts to achieve the SDGs.

UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis noted that some 1.2 billion people will still be living in poverty in 2022, and that about 8% of the global population will still be facing hunger by the end of the decade. At the current pace of SDG implementation, 575 million people will still be living in extreme poverty and 84 million children will be out of primary school by 2030.
At the conference, leaders adopted a political declaration on accelerating action to achieve the 17 SDGs. This declaration includes commitments to finance developing countries, support for effective debt relief mechanisms, reform of the international financial architecture, etc. "With ambitious coordinated action, by 2030, we can lift an additional 124 million people out of poverty and ensure that more than 113 million people are no longer malnourished," Mr. Francis affirmed.
