A special highlight of this year's Christmas season is the Christmas tree made of traditional lanterns, created by Hoi An ward and located in Hoai River Square.

The Christmas tree is made up of hundreds of traditional lanterns – a distinctive cultural symbol of the old town. The soft light from the lanterns creates a unique Christmas atmosphere, harmoniously blending tradition and modernity.

During Christmas, strolling through the ancient streets of Hoi An, visitors can easily feel a rare sense of peace. Instead of crowds and congestion, many choose to leisurely explore, listen to the slow pace of life, admire the moss-covered roofs, narrow alleys, and tranquil street corners along the gentle Hoai River.

Mr. Kneidl Fenske (a tourist from Germany) shared: “This is the first time I've brought my family to celebrate Christmas and New Year 2026 in Hoi An. The Christmas atmosphere here is very gentle, and the weather is warm. Although not overly bustling, I still see shops displaying Christmas trees and pretty little gifts, making this ancient town feel warm and giving the feeling of a truly peaceful Christmas season.”

Sharing the same sentiment, Mr. Younis Posh (an Indian tourist) said that his family chose Hoi An to enjoy the peaceful Christmas atmosphere after a turbulent year. “The past year has been truly difficult for the people of Hoi An and Vietnam due to the impact of natural disasters. Now, life is gradually returning to normal. This Christmas season brings much hope for a better new year, especially for the tourism industry,” Mr. Younis Posh shared.

The Christmas spirit isn't just on the streets; it's spreading to businesses and tourism establishments through creative and economical methods. Instead of elaborate decorations, many businesses are encouraging employees to utilize recycled materials like plastic bottles, cardboard, scrap wood, or leftover fabric to make Christmas trees and decorations.

Each product not only possesses aesthetic value but also conveys a message of environmental protection, reducing plastic waste, and promoting green and sustainable tourism, in line with the long-term development orientation of Hoi An ancient town.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, CEO of Emic Travel Hoi An, said: “We organized a competition to create Christmas trees from waste materials and discarded items to inspire creativity among our staff and employees; and at the same time, spread the message of environmental protection and green living to tourists.”

This year's Christmas in Hoi An feels warm and inviting. Warmth comes from the tranquility of the ancient town, from environmentally friendly innovations, and from the way the government, businesses, and people have joined hands to create a gentle, intimate Christmas season that truly reflects the Hoi An spirit.
