Where is the coldest place on Earth?

VTC NewsVTC News09/02/2024

The Earth has extremely cold and extremely hot regions stretching from the South Pole to the Arctic Circle, with average temperatures in these areas ranging from -25°C to 45°C. In addition, the Earth also has regions that are perpetually freezing cold, some uninhabitable for humans.

Where is the coldest place on Earth?

According to Live Science, the highlands of eastern Antarctica are the coldest regions on Earth, with temperatures that can drop to -98 degrees Celsius.

To determine this location, scientists used data from weather satellites at a mountainside on the Antarctic ice sheet, and the results obtained were -93°C to -98°C. This research was also published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

According to the same study, the factors contributing to the low temperatures in eastern Antarctica occur when clear skies combine with dry air and low humidity. Both of these conditions must persist for several days for temperatures to drop to -98 degrees Celsius.

Ted Scambos, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder, said that data measured in eastern Antarctica could be considered the limit of how cold can occur on the Earth's surface.

The coldest temperature ever recorded.

Before the record low temperatures of the East Antarctic plateau were set in August 2010, the Vostok Research Station, located 1,301 km from the South Pole, held the world record for the coldest temperature ever recorded.

During a 10-day period in the Southern Hemisphere, in the summer of 1983, weather data recorded temperatures as low as -89.2 degrees Celsius.

In 2009, researchers discovered that a cold air mass was preventing relatively warm air from the Southern Ocean from reaching the edge of Antarctica, trapping the Vostok station in a vortex of icy air. There was also no cloud cover to help maintain the temperature for longer.

The study was also published in the Journal of Geographical Research, and the scientists suggest that under the right conditions, the weather could be even colder at Vostok Station, with record low temperatures potentially reaching -96 degrees Celsius.

Where is the coldest place inhabited?

The village of Oymyakon in eastern Siberia is known as the coldest inhabited place on Earth. Its name means "water that doesn't freeze" due to nearby hot springs. The town was originally a destination for reindeer herders, who would bring their herds to the springs to fetch water.

The average winter temperature in Oymyakon reaches -50°C. The village's coldest day on record was in 1924, when the temperature dropped to -71.2°C.

What is the lowest temperature in the Northern Hemisphere?

In the heart of the Arctic Circle, amidst the Greenland ice sheet, the Klinck weather station recorded the lowest temperature ever recorded in the northern hemisphere on December 22, 1993, dropping to -69.6 degrees Celsius.

The Klinck weather station is located at an altitude of 3,105 meters, near the highest point of Mount Gunnbjørn in Greenland. Researchers working for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) found the record low temperature while examining the station's 30-year archives.

This data has surpassed the previous record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere, which was -2 degrees Celsius. Before Klinck, the record low temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere were recorded at Verkhoyansk in February 1892 and Oymyakon in January 1933. Both locations were in Russia.

Which city is the coldest in the world?

Among the world's coldest cities, Yakutsk in Russia is the coldest. On January 18, 2023, the Siberian city broke a new record when its temperature dropped to -62.2 degrees Celsius – the coldest in nearly two decades.

Located just 450 km south of the Arctic Circle, Yakutsk is also the largest city built on permafrost. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Yakutsk was in 1891, reaching a low of -64.4 degrees Celsius.

This city, with a population of 250,000, is located on the west bank of the Lena River, at an altitude of 95 meters above sea level. According to the North-Eastern Federal University of Russia, in winter it is covered in icy fog. The fog forms because, in cold conditions, warm air from people, cars, and houses cannot rise.
