As autumn arrives and the air gradually becomes milder, the rice fields of Ha Tinh province are bathed in a golden hue. The country roads are filled with laughter and chatter, and the sounds of rice harvesting machines signal the arrival of the harvest season, a time of joyful anticipation.
The combine harvester rumbles across the fields of Dong Vinh village, Tan Dan commune (Duc Tho district), harvesting the summer-autumn rice crop for the local people.
These days, the rice fields in the low-lying areas outside the dike in Duc Tho district have turned a golden yellow, like poured honey. Combine harvesters are being quickly mobilized to help farmers harvest their summer-autumn rice crops early to avoid flooding.
Tan Dan commune (Duc Tho district) has planted over 430 hectares of rice, including 200 hectares of summer-autumn rice to avoid flooding, using the short-day BO-09 variety. In her family's rice field, Ms. Hoang Thi Thu (Dong Vinh village) is busily packing rice into sacks for transport home. Ms. Thu happily shared: “If we waited until the rice was fully ripe to harvest, we were afraid of the floods coming and not being able to react in time. So when the rice was 80-90% ripe, we started hiring machines to harvest it, achieving a yield of about 1.8 quintals per sao (approximately 1000 square meters). At this rate, in just a few days, my family's 1.6 acres of BO-09 rice will be harvested.”
Farmers in the area outside the dike in Duc Tho are delighted because the summer-autumn rice crop has been harvested successfully.
Mr. Tran Duc Thang, Chairman of the Tan Dan Commune People's Committee, said: "In recent years, the 100% short-day crop rotation has contributed to ensuring a successful summer-autumn harvest for farmers. The commune has focused on leading and directing production, from crop rotation, planting schedules, care procedures, and pest and disease control... to ensure good yields at the end of the season."
For farmers, after days of sleepless nights of planting, plowing, and tending to their crops, the rice harvest always arrives with anxiety but also with much hope. In the early morning, while dew still clings to the leaves, farmers in Kim Song Truong commune (Can Loc district) eagerly head to the fields to harvest their early summer-autumn crop.
While busily carrying sacks and tools while waiting for the combine harvester to arrive, Mr. Thanh Van (Kim Thinh village) happily said: “By this time, I have harvested nearly 3 sao (approximately 3,000 square meters), with an average yield estimated at over 2.5 quintals per sao. Our village proactively harvested early, so it was very convenient to arrange the machinery; in about a day, the nearly 5-hectare field was completely harvested.”
Farmers in Thach Ha and Can Loc districts have begun harvesting their early-planted rice crops.
This year's summer-autumn crop in Kim Song Truong commune covers an area of over 900 hectares. This is one of the earliest rice-harvesting areas in the region, thanks to farmers proactively planning their planting schedule and primarily choosing the short-day BT-09 variety. Currently, rice in other villages such as Thuong Xa, Binh Ho, Thuc Yen, etc., is also basically ripe and can be harvested in the coming days.
Mr. Tran Xuan Tinh (Binh Minh village, Cam Binh commune, Cam Xuyen district) couldn't hide his happiness as he watched all his hard work bear fruit in his hands. “This season, I cultivated nearly 3 acres of rice fields, the largest area in the last 3 years. I took good care of the plants and monitored them regularly, so the rice grew well, with large, plump ears. Summer-autumn production always faces many difficulties because of prolonged hot weather and worries about storms at the end of the season. Now, all we hope for is that the rice will be transported home safely; only then can we breathe a sigh of relief,” Mr. Tinh shared.
The yield of summer-autumn rice in 2023 is estimated to reach over 50.28 quintals/hectare.
As the locality with the largest area of summer-autumn rice production in Ha Tinh province in 2023 (over 9,000 hectares), Cam Xuyen district mobilized machinery and concentrated manpower to accelerate the planting process from the beginning of the season. Thanks to adhering to the planting schedule, pest and disease control, and appropriate water management, the rice developed favorably, with fairly firm and uniform ears. It is expected that Cam Xuyen district will harvest the summer-autumn crop simultaneously from September 2nd to 10th.
With the widespread influence of Resolution 06-NQ/TU dated November 18, 2021, issued by the Provincial Party Committee on leading and directing the implementation of land consolidation and accumulation associated with the construction of new rural areas in the 2021-2025 period (Resolution 06), in the 2023 summer-autumn crop season, farmers continued to invest in production, standardizing seeds and planting seasons, contributing to increased productivity and quality, aiming towards a commodity-based production system.
To date, the total area of land reclamation to create larger, more concentrated plots throughout the province has reached 10,669.63 hectares. Of this, Cam Xuyen district accounts for 2,849.6 hectares, Thach Ha 2,132.3 hectares, Ky Anh 688.6 hectares, Loc Ha 538.5 hectares, and so on.
Large fields with synchronized irrigation and transportation infrastructure have helped Thach Tri commune (Thach Ha district) to harvest its summer-autumn crop quickly.
Large, well-developed fields with synchronized irrigation and transportation infrastructure are making the new rural landscape in Thach Ha even more prosperous during harvest season. Mr. Tran Van Vinh ( Binh Duong village, Thach Hoi commune) happily shared: “With this ‘great revolution,’ the road and irrigation system in the fields has been completely renovated. Previously, this area could only cultivate the spring crop, but now we can plant both the spring and autumn crops. The people are very happy. The concentrated fields make production easier, saving a lot of time and effort.”
Traders are buying rice directly from the fields in Can Loc district.
According to information from the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the 2023 summer-autumn crop covered an area of 44,700 hectares throughout the province. Thanks to proactive production planning, timely planting, the use of short-day varieties (under 110 days), and appropriate water management, the rice plants grew well and bloomed favorably. The harvested area to date has reached over 1,200 hectares, with an estimated yield of over 50.28 quintals/hectare (approximately the same as the 2022 summer-autumn crop), and efforts are being made to complete harvesting before September 15th.
