On the sedge field, dozens of households in the Hong Lam "oasis" set up tents and stretched tarps to harvest and dry the sedge... Starting from 3 - 4 am, people started cutting sedge before the Lam River tide rose. Ms. Ho Thi Dinh said: " My family has now harvested nearly 2/7 of thesedge. This year's sedge yield is quite stable, estimated at more than 4 - 4.5 quintals/sedge. However, the weather has not been sunny in the past few days, and the Lam River has risen, making it more difficult to harvest and dry the sedge."
Fresh sedge is put into a machine and split into two. This is a process that takes a lot of time and effort. “ After the sedge is split in half, it will be dried in the sun for 2-3 days in the field to make it light and soft. People who dry sedge fear the rain the most because it will be damaged and the sedge will turn black and cannot be sold, ” said Mr. Nguyen Van Tho. In recent days, due to the impact of storm No. 3, water from upstream has poured down, causing the downstream Lam River to rise and flood into farmers' sedge fields. Some people have to use boats to transport sedge after harvesting.
According to households, the price of dried sedge this year is quite good, each kilogram of sedge is purchased by traders at a price of 9,000 - 10,000 VND, 2,000 - 3,000 VND higher than the same period last year. With the above selling price, each sao of sedge earns people nearly 5 million VND. Every afternoon, the sedge is tied into bundles and brought home to continue drying, and at the same time, it is sorted and sold to traders in the village. It is known that the dried sedge will be imported to establishments in Thanh Hoa province to be used as raw materials for weaving mats and producing handicrafts. Sedge is considered the main crop of dozens of households in the Hong Lam "oasis". Every year, sedge begins to be harvested from July to September. People do not have to pay for seeds, but for the sedge to grow well, they have to spend time cutting grass, investing in fertilizer and working hard when it comes to harvest time.

The entire Hong Lam village currently has nearly 50 hectares of sedge with 90 households participating in production. Up to this point, farmers have harvested about 10% of the area. In general, this year's sedge crop has unfavorable weather due to heavy rain, but thanks to the attention and investment of farmers in care, the harvest is still good, with quite high yields. This is also the main source of income for many households in the "oasis" area in the middle of the Lam River.
