Farmers are boldly changing the structure of their crops and livestock.
Implementing the movement of farmers competing in production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty, with the support of farmers' associations at all levels in the city, many members have boldly transformed the structure of crops and livestock, bringing high economic efficiency. For example, Mr. Huynh Thanh Lam in Nhon Ai commune has built and developed a specialized durian farming model, earning billions of VND per year. Mr. Huynh Thanh Lam was honored to be selected by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association as one of the "Outstanding Vietnamese Farmers" in 2025.
Previously, Mr. Lam's garden grew oranges, sapodillas, lemons, apricots, etc., but the economic efficiency was not high. In 2015, Mr. Lam renovated more than 1 hectare of garden land, planting bitter gourd durian - a fruit tree variety considered high-value at the time. Gradually, he switched to growing high-quality durian varieties.
With the dedicated support of agricultural extension officers and the farmers' association, Mr. Lam has successfully applied scientific and technical methods to production, achieving high profits. Starting with 1 hectare, he accumulated capital to buy and rent more land, increasing the total durian cultivation area to nearly 6 hectares (of which 4.2 hectares belong to his family). In 2021, he sold 48 tons of durian. By 2025, production had increased to 80 tons, generating an income of over 5 billion VND per year.
Furthermore, Mr. Lam proactively connects and unites farmers to cooperate in production to increase the value of agricultural products. In 2019, he and like-minded farmers established a cooperative group, and in May 2024, officially upgraded the cooperative group to Tan Thanh Durian Cooperative.
Mr. Ho Ba Phieu, residing in Long Thanh 2 area, Thot Not ward, earns over 2 billion VND per year thanks to his rice seed production model. Mr. Phieu is one of the exemplary farmers selected to receive the title of "Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer" in 2024.
According to Mr. Phieu, the movement of farmers competing in production and business has awakened the spirit of self-reliance, self-improvement, and the aspiration to legitimately become rich for many members and farmers. Through the movement, he changed his production mindset from traditional rice cultivation to a model of growing high-quality rice seeds, which has brought very clear economic benefits. Currently, in addition to producing 12 hectares of rice seeds, Mr. Phieu has partnered with many farmers to build a strong rice seed production force, covering an area of about 100 hectares, and has signed contracts to guarantee the purchase of the products.
Besides investing in developing the production model, since 2007, Mr. Phieu has built a facility for processing, packaging, and providing rice seed services with an area of 3,000m2, including: 4 drying ovens and 2 rice sorting machines. On average, this facility supplies more than 1,000 tons of rice seeds annually to farmers in the city and neighboring provinces...
In 2024, Mr. Ho Ba Phieu was selected by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Association as an "Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer" for his rice seed production model.
Spreading the movement of farmers competing in production and business.
According to the Can Tho City Farmers' Association, the movement of farmers competing in production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty has developed strongly, attracting a large number of members and farmers to participate. To date, the city has 3 "Outstanding Billionaire Farmers" clubs and 78 "Farmers in Production and Business" clubs. These clubs are maintained and developed and have become places to gather, share experiences, and replicate production models with high economic efficiency. In 2023 and 2024, on average, over 297,600 farming households registered to compete in production and business, and after evaluation, more than 189,000 households achieved the title of "Farmers in Production and Business" at various levels each year.
In the coming period, farmers' associations at all levels in the city will continue to encourage members and farmers to actively participate in emulation of production and business; link and cooperate in production along the value chain to increase added value and food safety; and encourage members and farmers to actively participate in establishing agricultural production cooperatives and cooperative groups.
Simultaneously, associations at all levels continue to improve the quality of services, advice, guidance, and support regarding capital, technology, materials, and markets; attract social resources to participate in advising and supporting production, business, and service linkages; and apply digital transformation in the development of the collective economy…
City-level farmers' associations promptly commend exemplary farmers in production and business, outstanding farmers, exemplary cooperatives, scientists, and businesses that support farmers to encourage and motivate them, creating a ripple effect and attracting farmers to participate in the patriotic emulation movement in general, and the movement of farmers in production and business in particular.
