Awakening interest in learning
Born into a family with roots in Dong Ngac village – a scholarly area of Hanoi – with her father working in the education sector and her sisters all pursuing teaching careers, Pham Thuy Hang developed a love for teaching at an early age. In 1994, after graduating with two degrees in English and Russian Education from the University of Foreign Languages Education (now the University of Foreign Languages - Vietnam National University, Hanoi), she began working at Nguyen Hue High School (formerly Ha Tay province).
The early days of teaching were quite challenging as she had to adapt to an environment with high professional demands. However, the experienced team became a "support system" that helped the young teacher grow. "I am fortunate to work in an environment with many excellent teachers who are always ready to share and support me," Ms. Hang recalled.
In 1997, when Nguyen Hue High School officially became a specialized school, the pressure of teaching increased. However, this motivated her to continuously learn and improve her professional skills. A memorable milestone was in 2008, when she won second prize in the Hanoi City Excellent Teacher Competition, a time of intense competition among schools after the merger of Ha Tay province and Hanoi city. Building on that foundation, she continued to participate in numerous international training programs in Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, and other countries. These experiences not only improved her foreign language skills but also broadened her teaching perspective in the context of modern integration.
According to teacher Pham Thuy Hang, teaching at specialized schools requires teachers to constantly innovate. Students have a strong foundation and quick thinking, so if the lesson lacks appeal, it will be difficult to create engagement. Therefore, in each lesson, she always focuses on creating interest for the students. For non-specialized classes, methods such as learning through games, group activities, and drama are flexibly applied to increase student initiative.
For students specializing in certain subjects, she aims for in-depth knowledge by utilizing practical learning resources such as international news bulletins and current affairs programs, thereby honing listening skills, critical thinking, and the ability to use language in real-world contexts. "Students will be more interested when they see knowledge connected to real life. To achieve this, teachers must constantly learn and refresh their knowledge every day," Ms. Hang shared.

"Leveraging" the quality of advanced education.
2015 marked a significant turning point in her career when she took on a management role. As Vice Principal, Ms. Pham Thuy Hang continued teaching while also participating in shaping the school's strategic development.
One of the notable achievements is the promotion of foreign language proficiency throughout the school, not only for English-specialized students but also in natural science subjects. According to her, English is an important tool for students to access global knowledge, especially in scientific research and international exams.
Based on this orientation, the school implements various solutions such as supplementing specialized terminology and enhancing academic communication skills for students in the competition teams. English teachers are assigned to accompany students participating in international competitions such as the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) or science and technology research competitions.
In addition, the development of the teaching staff is emphasized. The school prioritizes recruiting teachers with a strong background, especially former students of specialized schools; and creates opportunities for them to participate in training courses both domestically and internationally. Ms. Hang herself maintains her research with 14 recognized innovative teaching methods at the departmental level, including 2 at the city level, many of which have high applicability in teaching and management.
Innovative approaches have contributed to improving the quality of education at Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted. In the 2024-2025 academic year, 42 out of 50 students participating in the national excellent student competition won awards, including 1 first prize, 11 second prizes, 13 third prizes, and 17 consolation prizes. At the Northern Coastal Region excellent student competition, 30 out of 36 students won awards, with numerous medals.
Not only in national competitions, but the school's students have also made their mark on the international stage with medals at the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), along with many awards in science research competitions, robotics competitions, ASEAN+3 competitions, WICO, etc. Cultural, sports, and arts activities have also achieved many positive results, contributing to the holistic development of students.
According to teacher Pham Thuy Hang, achievements are proof of the effectiveness of the reform process, but they are not the only goal. "The most important thing is still the growth of both students and teachers," she emphasized. With her dedication and persistent contributions, teacher Pham Thuy Hang has been recognized with many titles such as Outstanding Emulation Soldier at the grassroots level, Outstanding Emulation Soldier at the city level, along with commendations from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Hanoi People's Committee, and the Prime Minister.
The Hanoi City Council for Awarding Titles has just publicly released the list of 123 teachers nominated for the titles of People's Teacher (5 teachers) and Excellent Teacher (118 teachers) for the 17th awarding ceremony in 2026 to gather public opinion. Among the 118 nominees for the title of Excellent Teacher is Ms. Pham Thuy Hang, Deputy Principal of Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted.
Nearly three decades into her teaching and administrative work, teacher Pham Thuy Hang has maintained her dedication to each lesson, constantly innovating to inspire students to learn. From specific lessons to strategic direction, teacher Pham Thuy Hang's journey demonstrates that educational innovation doesn't begin with grand gestures, but is nurtured in every classroom session and by every teacher.
