"Joining forces" to raise snakehead fish using technology.
In Cam Hong, in recent years, due to difficulties in the fishing industry, many people have sought new directions by engaging in aquaculture. Like many farmers in the sandy area of Tan Hoa village, three years ago, Mr. Tran Song Huynh also tried his hand at shrimp farming.
“At that time, I and another farmer in the commune invested about 200 million VND to raise shrimp in two ponds. However, due to harsh climatic conditions, the shrimp were susceptible to disease and grew slowly. Fearing losses, we were forced to sell the shrimp before they reached the standard weight in order to recoup our investment,” Tran Song Huynh confided.
Recognizing the high risks involved in shrimp farming, Mr. Huynh discussed with his friend the possibility of switching to a more suitable aquaculture model. In fact, in neighboring villages, the model of raising snakehead fish on sandy soil has been popular among locals for a long time and yields quite high economic returns.

“Traditional snakehead fish farming on sandy soil poses a risk of environmental pollution. To create economic efficiency and ensure environmental safety, we decided to invest in high-tech farming. Because this method requires a large initial investment, I mobilized four other villagers to contribute capital and form a cooperative. On an area of 5,000 square meters , we invested nearly 6 billion VND to build five ponds lined with tarpaulin, equipped with all the necessary machinery and technology. On average, each pond is stocked with 35,000 fingerlings. Notably, our group invested in building a wastewater treatment system to avoid impacting the surrounding environment,” Mr. Huynh said.
Sharing the same capital with Mr. Huynh in high-tech snakehead fish farming, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan said: “Most of us lacked experience in snakehead fish farming. However, during the farming process, we visited and learned from other households in the area. With the knowledge we gained, we applied it to successfully raise the fish. The farming process showed that snakehead fish are well-suited to farming in ponds lined with tarpaulin. In addition, applying high-tech farming methods not only helps to reduce many diseases but also allows the fish to grow faster.”
To make the sandy area profitable.
After nearly a year of implementing high-tech snakehead fish farming on sandy soil, the model has brought the first "sweet fruits" to Mr. Huynh's family and other farmers. Currently, Mr. Huynh's ponds are bustling with traders coming to buy snakehead fish.
Unable to hide his joy after his hard work, Mr. Huynh happily shared: “This is the pond where we stocked the fingerlings last September. After 9 months of raising them, the snakehead fish have reached the standard and have firm, delicious meat. Thanks to applying the farming processes and techniques, this season's fish crop yielded a high output, about 30 tons per pond. After deducting expenses, each pond will bring an average profit of about 500 million VND.”
“In Cam Hong, snakehead fish farming is no longer a novel model. High-tech snakehead fish farming on sand has already been pioneered by farmers. However, linking households together to raise fish using high technology is considered the first of its kind. This farming method has many advantages, as it concentrates the farming area, thereby minimizing environmental pollution. In the future, the locality will create all conditions and encourage people to switch from small-scale farming to concentrated farming and apply high technology to achieve the best results,” said Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Cam Hong commune.
According to Mr. Huynh, to achieve high efficiency and avoid overloading during the breeding and harvesting process, he stocked and raised the five ponds in his model using a staggered method. Each month, he stocked one pond with fry. Once that pond was finished breeding and harvesting, he would then start breeding and harvesting the next pond.
The model of raising snakehead fish in sandy areas of Cam Hong commune has many advantages, including low pond and lake construction costs. Snakehead fish farming techniques are simpler than shrimp farming. “Previously, to ensure healthy shrimp growth and disease prevention, we hired a technician to supervise and guide us. However, with the high-tech snakehead fish farming model, we only need to learn from the experience of local people and follow the farming procedures to ensure healthy fish growth and high productivity. This also saves us some costs,” shared Mr. Tran Song Huynh.
The desire of high-tech snakehead fish farmers is for the government and relevant agencies to provide financial support and loans so that they can invest in, build, and expand the model, thereby creating a stable source of livelihood for laborers in the area.
