Tan Vinh thrives thanks to the golden bamboo crop that yields bamboo shoots.

QTO - Situated along the tranquil Vinh Dinh River, Tan Vinh neighborhood in Nam Dong Ha ward is transforming day by day. This achievement is largely due to the correct direction in restructuring crop patterns, exemplified by farmer Nguyen Ngoc Sang's model of growing golden bamboo for shoots.

Awakening the riverside land

Tan Vinh neighborhood has the advantage of favorable land conditions. Previously, residents mainly cultivated rice, but the yield was unstable. Recognizing this situation, many households have boldly switched to higher-value crops.

Compared to traditional crops, golden bamboo has a significant advantage due to its year-round bamboo shoot production, providing a steady monthly income and yielding economic value many times higher than rice cultivation on the same area. To date, the entire neighborhood has developed 35 hectares of golden bamboo. The bamboo helps people stabilize their income while also helping to prevent soil erosion along the Vinh Dinh River.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Sang was a pioneer in bringing the golden bamboo variety to Tan Vinh. In 2000, after conducting research, he began implementing a model of growing bamboo for its shoots. Mr. Sang shared: “Previously, I grew the Bat Do bamboo, but this type only yields shoots for one season. In 2003, I switched entirely to golden bamboo. The biggest advantage of this plant is that it can be harvested year-round, the shoots are crispy and sweet, and when pickled, they don't turn dark but remain beautifully white, making them popular in the market.”

With nearly 3 hectares of lush green bamboo, Mr. Sang's family harvests tens of tons of commercial bamboo shoots each year. Selling them at around 20,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, he earns a profit of 250-300 million VND annually. To increase value, Mr. Sang processes the bamboo shoots himself at home. Fresh bamboo shoots are peeled, thinly sliced, and fermented according to a hygienic process. The product has a distinctive aroma and natural color, so it is often in short supply.

Currently, all of Mr. Sang's products and those of the local people are purchased steadily by dealers at Dong Ha market, affirming the reputation of the Tan Vinh bamboo shoot brand.

Spreading the spirit of wealth creation to the community.

Not content with enriching himself, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Sang also dedicated his efforts to helping the community. During the period of 2020-2023, as the head of the Farmers' Association in Tan Vinh neighborhood, he set a leading example in promoting the restructuring of crop cultivation. Based on the practical success of his family's bamboo garden, he actively encouraged his neighbors to participate.

Mr. Sang is always ready to share his experience with local people regarding techniques for separating bamboo shoots, fertilizing methods, and the optimal time to harvest bamboo shoots for the highest yield, for anyone who wants to learn. His spirit of solidarity and mutual support has contributed to the strong spread of the movement of farmers competing to excel in production and business in the locality.

Thanks to his dedication and enthusiasm, the area planted with golden bamboo in this region has developed very well, creating seasonal jobs for dozens of local workers, helping many families rise out of poverty and have a more prosperous life.

Evaluating the effectiveness and scalability of this model, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thoa, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Nam Dong Ha Ward, said: “Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Sang's model of growing golden bamboo for shoots is a prime example of the spirit of daring to think, daring to act, and applying scientific and technological advancements to production. The model has helped many families rise to legitimate wealth, while also making an important contribution to poverty reduction and the construction of a civilized urban area in the locality.”

Mr. Sang's success has completely changed people's perceptions of farming on riverside land. The golden bamboo is not only a poverty-relief crop but has become a source of wealth for urban farmers.

“The Farmers' Association of the ward will continue to coordinate with all levels and sectors to support members with capital and technology. We focus on encouraging farmers to boldly convert inefficient rice production areas or alluvial land to high-value models such as golden bamboo. At the same time, the association will strengthen propaganda and encourage members to participate in professional associations to create close links from production to consumption,” Ms. Thoa added.

The Farmers' Association of the ward is also planning to coordinate with specialized agencies to guide farmers in building production processes according to VietGAP standards. The goal is to develop Tan Vinh clean bamboo shoots into a distinctive OCOP product of the locality. This will help bamboo shoots reach not only traditional markets but also supermarkets and clean agricultural product stores, contributing to the sustainable development of the local economy.
